JAVS Summer 2023

From the President

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

missed the incredible Music and Your Brain sessions with Molly Gebrian, you can find them on our website under the Events section. Coming this fall, we plan to have a series of classes on Body Mapping, as it has been an area of great interest to many of you. If you have ideas or wishes for future series, please send suggestions to info@ americanviolasociety.org All of these offerings would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of your AVS Board. On July 1, Molly Gebrian, Ann Roggen, Yuij Wowczuk, and Laurel Yu will conclude their positions on the board. Their service has been greatly appreciated and they will be missed! All endings are also new beginnings, and as such we welcome several new board members: Gabrielle Padilla, Cody Russell, Molly Wilkens-Reed, and Rose Wollman. In addition, we have a change this year in our Executive team. It is hard to believe three years has passed, but my term as President concludes as the wonderful Ames Asbell will take over the helm. With the help of President-Elect Daphne Gerling, the American Viola Society is in great hands. It has been a pleasure to serve and I look forward to much more of the AVS in the years to come! Our next Festival will be held alongside the Primrose International Viola Competition June 19-22, 2024, at the Colburn School in Los Angeles. Proposals will be accepted through August 1. I hope to see many of you there!

Happy Summer to you! Summers are never quite the same for AVS members in Festival off years… and yet, we still have many exciting developments at the AVS to share with you! One new program that we hope you will find useful is our

Educator Mini-Grants. We had our first call for proposals close in May, and up to $500 in seed funding will be awarded to help members benefit their teaching. We hope to expand this pilot program in the coming year. AVS Recordings was formed in 2021 as a means to provide affordable recording opportunities for our members. For the inaugural album, the AVS requested submissions of works for solo viola or viola and piano by composers from underrepresented demographics. The response was tremendous, and the final selections on the album were determined through a rigorous peer review process. All violists heard on AVS Presents 2023 – Works by Underrepresented Composers are members of the AVS, and the album will be available this summer. All current members on the day of release will receive a complimentary copy of this inaugural album, so encourage your friends, colleagues and students to join so as to receive this extra perk of membership!

We’ve continued to expand our online series. If you
