First, this manual helps advocates frame the issues on which they work in terms of international human rights standards. Next, the manual helps advocates identify human rights- based strategies they can use to ensure these rights are fulfilled for all people. Allen? Look up codes of ethics from other social work groups, such as the Clinical Social Work Association (https:// www. clinicalsocialworkassociation.org/ CSWA- Ethics), the National Association of Black Social Workers (http:// nabsw.org/ ?page=CodeofEthics), or the International Federation of Social Workers/International Association of Schools of Social Work (http:// ifsw.org/ policies/ statement- of- ethical- principles). How do they compare with NASW’s code regarding advocacy? Do you prefer some aspect of one of the other codes to the NASW code? 3. Can you think of codes of ethics from other professions that you might wish to follow, such as the American Psychological Association, the American Society for Public Administration, or the American Bar Association? Look them up and compare them with NASW’s Code of Ethics. 4. Choose one of the ethical dilemma examples presented in this chapter. With others, decide what you would do if faced with that situation in your life. Be sure to use an appropriate code of ethics to make your thinking process clear. 5. Discuss a current controversial issue regarding social justice from the perspective of Rawls, Nozick, Young and Allen, or others. For example, what is the “correct” response to police use of deadly force in a racially disproportionate way? How do the debates regarding distributive justice apply here? Or in what ways do current debates around gun control have distributive justice implications? Choose a topic and decide what position you support based on a clear view of distributive justice.
