A Bit of History and Geography...

Perpignan , chief town of French Catalonia. Barcelona , chief town of Spanish Catalonia. Straddling two countries,

Catalonia is divided by a natural border: the Pyrenees.

In Spain, four provinces make up Catalonia: Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona. Le Roussillon is its French part; the Spanish Crown gave it away to the French in 1659. In Catalan, the flag of Catalonia’s name is “ la senyera ” and it is adorned with four red and golden horizontal strips. It is one of the oldest European flags, it dates back to the IX th  century and its creation remains legendary. The country’s emblem is the donkey , the « ruc català » in Catalan. Catalonians consider it as the symbol of their region, in opposition to the bull that is the Spain’s emblem. In Catalonia, many vineyards produce excellent quality wines. In  Spanish Catalonia , the most well known appellations are Penedès, Cava, Tarragona, Costers del Segre and Priorat. In France, the Catalan vineyard belongs to the  Languedoc-Roussillon , which is composed of great wines that are worth just as much as any wine from other regions.
