3048

Tsungkow as the mailing route due to war Mailed on 2nd October 1949 from Tsungkow (49.08.16), 13th October transit via Kaohsiung, 19th October 19 transit via Swatow (49.10.24), arrived in Hong Kong on 12th November for forwarding to Japan. The letter was unable to deliver to the recipient in Japan and was returned to the sender. The cover was affixed with one Domestic Unit stamp, yet Tsungkow Military Control Commission accepted as postage for international mail. Also, as indicated in Lot 3055, the postal routing between Tsungkow was blocked during October/November 1949. This letter therefore had to route through Kaohsiung. Both Swatow and Kaohsiung were Koumintang Controlled Area, yet their post offices were willing to handle mail from Liberated area. This is a special case of Communist/Nationalist postal cooperation. HK$ 18,000 - 20,000
