Second Overprint of West Szechwan Post Office Name
Fearing the Silver Yuan stamps would fall into hands of the Communists, on 24th November, the Central Post Office in Chengtu and the neighbouring post offices reinstated the local use restrictions and overprinting of names of post offices on Silver Yuan stamps. The issuing of Second Overprint stamps came to a stop with the liberation of Chengtu on 27th December 1949. Mailed on 22nd January 1949 sent from Tseliutsing (49.12.05), 25th December transited via Chungking, 8th January 1950 arrived in Shanghai. Obviously, a stamp is missing here. Assuming it was a 5 fen stamp, the total value on cover would be 65 fen which was the double registered express rate for a 120 gram letter. The “航空” (Airmail) on the reverse appears to coincide with the total value of 60 fen remaining stamps on cover which was the postage rate for a 80 gram airmail registered letter. This however was not possible. Tzeliutsing did not have air service and Chungking airport was closed since 28th November, two days before its’ liberation. HK$ 22,000 - 25,000
