FIRE ANTS Fire ants are reddish-brown ants living in large mounds, mostly in warmer climates. They attack with little warning, inserting highly concentrated toxins that cause burning and pain. Fire ants are prevalent in the southern United States from Texas to North Carolina. Red fire ant is the most prevalent species, and based on research, the venom from the red and black species of fire ants appear to be highly cross-reactive. Fire ants bite with their jaws while they sting. This allows them to pull the stinger out, rotate and sting again. A single ant can inflict several stings in a matter of moments. For people with fire ant allergy, stings may cause severe reactions, including anaphylaxis.
