IN HIS OWNWORDS: TY TAYPOTAT TAYPOTAT HOPING FOR BIG PUYALLUP BOOST

T he worst part about my birthday being on Christmas is having to wait a whole year for any kind of presents. But it all blends in as one now. Last year was hard because I was still in the recovery process frommy biceps injury, when I got hurt again. I fractured my sternum last year just before Cheyenne (Frontier Days). I was fighting injuries for three years. It was rough, it sucks. Everyone gets hurt. But it was not a good deal because I had been trying so hard to get healed up, and then that happened again. That took me out a little bit. Tough luck, I guess. I was sitting ninth in the world standings in 2016 when I tore my biceps. It was the biggest injury to overcome, to start to trust my biceps again and know it can handle all the power from the horses. It took about a year and a half to finally feel like it used to. It’s a very long recovery process. I tore the tendon right off. Luckily, Justin Sportsmedicine got me fixed up that next day. I couldn’t use it for two months at all. After that, the muscle was totally Canadian bareback rider Ty Fast Taypotat is hunting for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The 26-year-old from Regina, Saskatchewan, sat in 19th place in the PRCA | RAM World Standings as of Sept. 4 with $56,236. He was a little more than $10,000 out of 15th. Taypotat has battled injuries the last several years, including torn biceps when he was ninth in the world in 2016 and a fractured sternum a year later. After finishing 23rd in the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour standings, Taypotat qualified to compete at the Justin Finale in Puyallup, Wash., Sept. 6-9. His birthday is Dec. 25.

gone, totally weak. I couldn’t do anything with it. I had no trust in it for a long time because it was so weak. It wasn’t until a Canadian rodeo (in May of 2017) that I started to trust it again. But a couple months after that, I fractured my sternum. Now I’m starting to feel like myself again. My body feels great, I just have to start drawing some buckers now. This season has been good. Clint Laye asked me if I wanted to start traveling with him again. The time came where everything worked out, and we’re back traveling together again. That’s awesome. We feed off each other a lot. That’s a really good aspect of it. Our riding styles are a lot alike. We ride the same hand, so if one of us needs a rigging or a glove we can always loan our stuff. Puyallup is huge. That would be a good deal to do well at that rodeo. I just have to draw. I feel great, I’m ready for the buckers. If they throw them under me they’re going to get ridden. While my middle name is Fast, and people say I should be a calf roper, my dad rode bucking horses, too. That was his main event in his rodeo career. He roped calves too, during his bucking horse career. Then he got hurt, blew his knee out really bad. So he just kept on roping calves, and still does at amateur rodeos back home. My uncles still rope calves too, they’re really involved in rodeo, my aunties, too. We’re just a big rodeo family. I love the rodeo life. I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else. I’m sitting in a TimHortons right now waiting for a ride, and I’mOK with that, because I’m going to the next rodeo.

GRILLE COWBOY

Rookie PRCA tie-down roper Cody Craig, 20, is making a splash this year, as he’s 21st in the Sept. 4 PRCA | RAMWorld Standings. He also is in a tight battle with Ty Harris to see who wins the PRCA | Resistol tie-down roping rookie of the year. Craig leads the race by $2,357 and is making a push for the coveted Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

WITH TRACY RENCK PSN

How did you get involved with rodeo? Cody: Rodeo is all I have ever done my entire life. My dad (Jerimy) ropes a little bit, but the whole family on my dad’s side rodeoed, raised horses and ranched. How much pride do you take in being a roper from Idaho? Cody: I love it. There are not as many ropers (in Idaho), but there are still some good ones, and it is cool to be competing at this level and be from that part of the country. When I was growing up, I team roped as a heeler and tie-down roped. I just loved tie-down roping more because it is on yourself, you don’t have to worry about anybody else. What has been the best part of this season? Cody: Just getting experience and being able to rope around all these good guys. The coolest place I’ve been so far is when I got to rope in Colorado Springs (Colo., at the Pikes Peak Or Bust Rodeo in July). I’ve never traveled like this before, and it has been pretty crazy. What has been the most trying part of the season? Cody: Just remembering to stay positive and keep moving forward. You have ups and downs, and you have to overcome them. The mental aspect is one of the main parts of rodeo. I hate losing more than I like winning. You have to forget about it and go to the next one.” What horse are you using? Cody: I have a little roan horse who I have had for a few years, her name is Reba, and she is 12. She’s pretty green, but this year she’s really come along. She has been awesome. I have been really surprised about how well she has done, and she is just really tough.

Are you going to college or are you just competing in the PRCA full-time? Cody: I’m just rodeoing full time. This has been my dream since I was little.

When did you realize you might be able to make a living as a tie-down roper? Cody: My junior year of high school. I went down to Texas during the winter, and I realized I could compete pretty well against some top ropers. How did your PRCA career progress to this point? Cody: I went two years on my (PRCA) permit and that dang sure helped me a lot. I got to go to the RAM

Columbia River Circuit Finals Rodeo on my permit, and then I also was able to rope against a bunch of good guys at all the big rodeos up there in that circuit. It was cool. Now, it is awesome that I’m buddies with a lot of these PRCA stars, and I get to know them, and I get to try and beat them. Who have been the biggest influences and supporters of your rodeo career? Cody: My dad (Jerimy) and my mom (Sandi) and (fellow tie-down roper) Jake Pratt. Jake is going to make his first Finals this year. He has showed me the ropes and helped me out a lot. (Pratt was sixth in the Sept. 4 world standings.) Do you have any brothers or sisters? Cody: I have a brother, Blake, who is 17. He is a team roping heeler and a senior in high school. Where is your favorite restaurant to eat? Cody: Texas Roadhouse. I get the ribeye with iced tea and salad. Who is your favorite non-rodeo athlete? Cody: (Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker and former Baltimore Raven) Ray Lewis. He’s straight up and self-confident, which I like. Did you play other sports growing up? Cody: I played football until my freshman year of high school. I played linebacker and then I just started rodeoing all of the time. When you are not rodeoing, what do you do for fun? Cody: I like to go hunting (in Idaho). I hunt for about everything - deer, elk and coyotes. I have been hunting ever since I was little. What’s your go-to movie to watch? Cody: Young Guns . That’s a good Western with “Billy the Kid,” (played by Emilio Estevez).

Would you rather bungee jump or ride a roller coaster? Cody: Ride a roller coaster. The coolest roller coaster I’ve been on was the one in Las Vegas at New York New York. That was a blast.

TIME CAPSULE 1958

A s the first National Finals Rodeo approached, the world of profes- sional rodeo was abuzz with anticipation for the “World Series” of rodeo. Meanwhile, five future ProRodeo Hall of Famers made the front page of the Sept. 15, 1958, edition of the Rodeo Sports News : Harley May, Jack Buschbom, John W. Jones Sr., Guy Weeks and John Hawkins. That edition focused mostly on the 1958 Los Angeles rodeo, which was attended by 90,000, the best crowd in a five-year period. The high attendance increased the $12,500 purse to $24,125 (about $210,368 in 2018 dollars). May, pictured at left, was serving as president of the L.A. crowd and upcoming NFR were talk of cowboys

Rodeo Cowboys Association at the time, but his press coverage wasn’t about his presidential duties. Instead, he was pictured riding a bull to split the win with Don Adams at the Los Angeles Coliseum on Aug. 31, 1958. The pair split $2,359 (about $20,566 today). May was inducted into the inaugural ProRodeo Hall of Fame class in 1979, along with Buschbom, Jones and Hawkins. Weeks was inducted in 2001. Buschbom was one of

the “Stars of the Week” in the Sept. 15, 1958, edition for winning the saddle bronc riding at the Coliseum and splitting the bareback riding with Walt Mason to win the All-Around title in L.A. Jones won Los Angeles with a 4.9-second run to take home 29 percent of the purse, $1,871 (about $16,311 today). Weeks was also pictured, competing in saddle bronc riding at Sidney, Iowa. At the time, Weeks was in the Top 5 for the title and was a serious contender in bareback riding and calf roping and ranked second in the race for All-Around. Hawkins was set to redeem himself at that point in the 1958 season. In 1957, he fell 18 points shy of winning the world title for bareback riding. By September 1958, he’d taken the lead by 148 points over Benny Reynolds after winning at Fort Madison, Iowa. The cowboy with the most money won in a single event at that point in the 1958 season was calf roper Dean Oliver with $18,016 (about $157,098 today). Oliver was also inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1979.

R OUND THE SHORT

BY THE NUMBERS

The number of top bareback rides this season out of the top three that cowboys have recorded while being aboard C5 Rodeo’s Virgil. Virgil has the No. 2 ride of 91.25-points with Richmond Champion, while Tim O’Connell’s 91-point ride on Virgil is No. 3. Devan Reilly has the top-scored bareback ride this season with a 93-point ride on Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Killer Bee. Virgil was the 2017 PRCA Bareback Horse of the Year. The year Dick Yates (team roping), J.D. Yates (team roping) and Kelly Yates (barrel racing) qualified for the National Finals Rodeo. They are the only father-son- daughter trio to compete in the NFR in the same year. J.D.’s son, Trey Yates, is in good position to qualify for his first Wrangler NFR this year. Trey was fourth in the PRCA | RAM World Standings among team roping headers with $93,765 as of Sept. 4. The amount of money Trevor Brazile earned in 2012 to win the all-around title at the Pendleton (Ore.) Roundup, which remains the rodeo’s all-around money record. The Pendleton Roundup records date back to 1910. The 2018 Pendleton Roundup takes place Sept. 12-15.

Breaking PRCA records is nothing new for bull rider Sage Kimzey. The Strong City, Okla., cowboy added another to his resume, as he established the PRCA record for money earned in a season before the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo with $274,099, including ground money. Kimzey set the previous record last season with $237,152, including ground money. “Anytime you can mess with the history books it is always fun,” said Kimzey, 24. “That’s definitely a pretty good one for sure. There are a lot of different ones that mean lots of different stuff to lots of people, but with that one you are looking at every cowboy from history. Not only does it mean I did well, but also that our sport is going in the right direction. That’s really good.” As impressive as Kimzey’s season money total is, the four-time reigning world champion still hasn’t met his regular-season-money expectation. The 2018 PRCA regular season ends Sept. 30. “I was aware of what the (bull riding) regular- season record was before this year, and my goal is to win $300,000,” Kimzey said. Kimzey can increase his money total while King Kimzey Bull rider breaks regular-season money record

competing in the Wrangler Tour’s Justin Finale in Puyallup, Wash., Sept. 6-9. The top 24 competitors in the Tour standings in each event earned a spot at the Justin Finale. “I’m excited for Puyallup for sure, it should be a lot of fun,” he said. Last season, Kimzey set the bull riding record

for most money won after the Wrangler NFR at $436,479, which is also a record he wants to break again. “It would be awesome if I could bump that up to half a million dollars just in one event, just riding bulls in the PRCA that would be an accomplishment for sure,” he said.

Bull riders Elliott, Farrell to be inducted in Chadron State Hall PRCA Bull Riding World Champion Dustin Elliott (2004) and Wrangler National Finals Rodeo bull riding qualifier Will Farrell (2003) will be among the eight individuals inducted into the Chadron (Neb.) State College Athletic Hall of Fame following Chadron State’s football game with New Mexico Highlands, Oct. 27. At Chadron State, Farrell and Elliott combined to win three national college bull riding titles in four years. Farrell was the champion in 1999 and 2002, and Elliott won the crown in 2001. Elliott qualified for the Wrangler NFR four times – 2004-06 and 2010. Farrell finished 15th in the world standings in his lone appearance at the NFR.

Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame adds members New inductees into the Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame were celebrated at Central Washington University on Aug. 30. Inductees this year were the late Katherine “Kay” Forbes Hageman, the Frank Wallace Family, and the team-roping pair of Jake Barnes and Clay O’Brien Cooper. After the inductions, the “Shades of Fame” auction raised money for the Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame Museum. Local businesses sponsored artists from around the region to create one-of-a- kind lamps for the auction. Bidders paid hundreds of dollars to take the pieces of art home, with at least one piece fetching more than $1,000. Walla Walla Frontier Days honors cowboys Cowboy legends Darrell Mayberry, Joe Bronkhurst and Tim Corfield were honored at Walla Walla (Wash.) Frontier Days, Sept. 1. Mayberry was born in Walla Walla and competed for many years as a member in the PRCA, ACTRA and Pioneer Posse, and in amateur rodeo.
