USD Softball 1987

UNIVERSITY PROFILE The University of San Diego is an independent, Catholic university located on a 170-acre mesa overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor, and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park after the Spanish university town where St. Didacus (i.e., Diego) spent much of his time. Complementing its splendid natural setting is the University's loca– tion just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego - conveniently close to the major business, cultural, residential, and recreational areas, as well as the rail, bus and air terminals. Founded in 1949, USC is presently experiencing record attendance. Undergraduate enrollment stands at 3300, graduate students bring the overall campus enrollment to 5300. The University includes a College of Arts and Sciences, and Schools of Business Administration, Education, Nursing, and Law. Each is characterized by high academic standards, small classes, and excellent student-faculty relations. Though the majority of students come from the West Coast, every region of the United States is well-represented on campus. Students also attend USC from 24 foreign countries. Recreation and Athletic activities are expanding rapidly and include: sailing, crew, yoga, karate, surfing, modern dance, backpacking, and ballet. USC's intercollegiate sports for men include baseball, football, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, crew and tennis. In women's intercollegiate sports, USC fields programs in basketball, cross country, crew, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball.

1987 USD WOMEN'S SOFTBALL Last season the University of San Diego softball team finished the year with a 24-14 record, one of the best seasons in school history. The 1987 Toreras, under second-year coach Larry Caudillo, will be trying to improve upon that success. This year will be USD's second competing in the West Coast Athletic Conference and also its second competing at the NCAA Division I level. Two of the team's top three hitters return , but Caudillo will have all new faces on the mound. Sophomore Jeanne Weinsheim led the team last season in virtually every offensive category, batting .452 with 41 runs batted in, 39 runs scored, six homeruns and a .783 slugging percentage. She also had a .976 fielding percentage while playing first base. The team's lone senior will be Debbie Waynick, who batted .327 with 29 RBI and 19 runs scored in 1986. Waynick split her time last season behind the plate and at third base, which will probably be the case again this season. Caudillo will also be counting on a pair of juniors who started for the squad in 1986. Back at shorstop will be Andrea Clark, while Ann Martin will play one of the three outfield positions. Debbie Yoakum, another junior who played in 23 games a year ago, should also see considerable time in the outfield for the Toreras. Caudillo has four new pitchers on the team this season, with sophomore Susie Poser being the only non-freshman. Mandy Miller, Julie Lindhorst and Lisa Ziomkowski are the other three pitching candidates. The coach thinks the team can improve on last season 's success. " Our strength is I think we will have some depth, which we really didn't have last year," explained Caudillo. "The middle of our lineup is going to be strong, and our pitching could be strong. Our goal is to win 30 games. If we can get a good attitude going, we 'll be all right. "

HEAD COACH LARRY CAUDILLO

Larry Caudillo begins his second season as head coach at USD after guiding the Toreras to a 24-14 record in his first year. Last season was also USD's first of playing softball at the NCAA Division I level. Caudillo had been an assistant with the softball team for one season before taking over the top spot. A graduate of San Diego State University, he has also been an assistant football coach at USD for 12 years. Caudillo played baseball for two seasons at Grossmont Col– lege and then for two more seasons at USO. Larry and his wife Judy live in San Diego.
