FEBRUARY 2017

Column by: Lois Stern Photography by : Bob Cohen

We are the BARTFIELDS, MARY ANNE, GERRY and IZZY. We live on Toulouse Drive and also reside in Belmont Massachusetts. Izzy is the sweetest little girl who knows just how to win your heart. Five years ago when our second Golden Retriever KC passed away, Gerry and I felt we could not go through the loss of another beloved pet. However, our son, Dan, had his own idea. He bought Izzy from a Chicago breeder, trained her and presented her to us. He told us, Izzy needs you but we all know that we are the ones who needed Izzy. A home without a pet is not complete. What would it be like not to have dog hair throughout your home. Izzy has been with us for almost 4 years and has brought us such joy. A few years ago, Gerry played golf at Frenchman’s Creek. He came home and said what an amazing community Frenchman’s was. This is where he wanted to be. He was right. Frenchman’s is an unique place. Everyone has been so welcoming. I am told as good as I feel Frenchman’s is today, it will get better.

We have been here for about two months and it has been wonderful. Izzy enjoys her walks through the neighborhood and especially loves her new friends she has met at the dog park. We are all looking forward to many years here and spending amazing times with our new friends.

RAENELL and BROOKSIE GOLD members since 2001 live on Ver- dun Drive. Pictured on the left is the newest addition to the Gold Family, Mason, a total terrier. We adopted him through Amber’s Animal Outreach and our Vet, Mark South, D.V.M. He loves Dixie Lee, Dudley, Eleanor Roosevelt and Mephistopheles. The first two our other dogs and the last two our cats! Bedtime can get a little crowded because they all sleep with us. Needless to say, the group keeps us on our toes!

GARI and IRA DANSKY are longtime residents of Greenwich, Connecticut and live at Frenchman’s on Marseilles Drive. They have two daughters, 4 grandchildren and 2 delightful Havanese puppies, Barnum and Bailey. “The Boys,” quoting Gari, as we refer to them were rescued from a puppy mill and brought to West Palm Beach where we intended to get 1 girl and and ended up with 2 boys! Ira is retired as Executive Vice President and General Counsel of the Jones Group. He now donates his free time to SCORE, which provides free business services. Gari has had an Interior Design business for the past 40 years in Greenwich and Manhattan. They love their house, the Frenchman’s community, having determined to reside only in French- man’s. They have many friends from up North and look forward to expanding relationships. with me); we live on Deauville Drive ( a house Michael bought in 2000.) We met when I was 2 1/2 years old, after I had given birth to a litter. The story goes like this…. When Suzanne agreed to marry Michael in 2008, she conditioned the marriage on having a dog. Michael never had a dog but he reluctantly agreed. So, shortly after they tied the knot, Suzanne visited with my breeder. There, she met me and about a dozen other dogs. I sat quietly near her in the most perfect form and manner. At that time, I was not too sure about human cuddles but I also knew I did not want to be a mother again. I kept my distance but I instantly knew I liked Suzanne. When she left, I stood by the door and whined. The next day, Suzanne returned to the breeder to pick up a jacket that she “accidentally” left behind. I was happy to see her and showed my affections. Michael joined Suzanne but could barely tolerate the sights, smells and noises of my home. Lucky for me, he thought I was cute…. I obviously put my best face forward. To this day, Michael claims Suzanne left her jacket behind so that he could meet me. Any who, as they say “the rest is history.” Michael is now smitten with me and as we dogs say, ‘a convert is the best type of dog owner!’ I live the dog dream. I am a canine snow bird traveling between Chicago and Florida,

SUZANNE KOPP– MOSKOW and MICHAEL MOSKOW have an 11 year old tri-color Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. And he even writes! Thank you for noticing that I do not look my age. I am deaf but I can read lips, have an amazing nose for ice cream and feel peoples’ every emotion. I live with Suzanne and Michael Moskow ( well better said…. They live

although stuck under a seat in a plane is no great thrill. I prefer Florida where I can ride on the back of Suzanne’s bike in an basket, bum a ride in the golf cart, chase the lizards on occasion and visit the 19th Hole where, after I reluctantly walk there, I get a mere Cheerio for my efforts. I have become the Moskows’ trusted companion and they have be- come mine. It has been a great life together so far and we are hoping for many more years to come. Suzanne is writing a children’s book and I, of course, will be a main character….. Stay tuned! I am grateful that Frenchman’s Creek is hospitable to its canine members. But, if I may add, real dog treats at the 19th Hole would greatly improve the experience.

This year, the members of Frenchman's Creek marked the 24th annual members art exhibit with a show and dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings, January 20th and 21 st . The show lasted until Tuesday, January 24th. Art Expo 2017 named, ARTrageous, A Night of Art and Music. The artwork of our residents, staff and 15 children, 65 in number and many of them new, presented works of art that included painting, sculpture, needlework, pottery, wood turning, photography, ship building, knitting, jewelry, and wall hangings. This work was exhibited in a gallery with clever panels, wonderful lighting that was magically created in our living and bar rooms by our hardworking engineers and the curator responsible for the show was once again, the talented Kelly Luchini. Our chairman is the tireless Barry Fenner. There was an open bar and an exquisite gourmet dinner prepared by our executive chef, Bernd, and his staff. The Euphoria Orchestra played for everyone’s dancing pleasure. In addition, on Tuesday evening there was a complimentary Art Lecture given by Dr. Joan Lipton of FAU. Altogether there were 220 paintings. Assisting, the Chairman were Ruth Amiel and Joan Gelch and their energetic committee. This was the first year that our young children members were represented and they were the hit of the show! This has become one of the most anticipated and enjoyed events of our season. Norma writes that so often she has heard people remark how creative so many of our members are and how interesting it is to learn about their talents. Many of the artists were interviewed by Norma and their comments concerning their work has been appearing on Channel 999, our FCTV channel. Especially watch for our young children’s comments!

The Trio Sports Challenge, was held Sunday February 12th and we could not have asked for better weather to start off the event. The day began at 8:30 am with one and a half hours of Tennis, at 10:00 am we then moved on to Pickleball which we played for approximately an hour and a half which by then everyone was exhausted but in a good way. So many people turned out for Pickleball, that it was nice to see everyone get a chance to try and play. The pros did a great job mixing everyone, therefore everyone got a chance to play with different people and at different levels. After Pickleball, lunch was something everyone looked forward to, as we needed to fuel ourselves before we teed off.

Our Golf did not receive a good turnout…but…with the people we had, everyone had a great time. Before we ended the day, cocktails and a great dinner was also part of our activities. There is nothing better than having fun doing what we love and meeting new friends. Overall the entire day was fantastic, we are looking forward to a much bigger group next year. And by the way, Mr. Tom Aveni was the only one that played all three sports…he truly was a champion. TIKKY

The Homefront column is designed to inform our members where in the community our new residents are liv- ing and other residences they may have. It also keeps up with our present members who have stayed in the community but moved to new dwellings.

Of course we always wish our members who are moving out of the community good luck wherever their travels take them and our new members and established members good luck in their new address.

Golf articles by Mimi Bergel

It was another wonderful Nine, Wine and Dine on February 3, and another day of super luck with the weather. Again there was a large turnout with enough players to cover both courses with four nine-hole flights, everyone playing a step-aside scramble. Our new Director of Golf, J.R.Congdon and Head Golf Pro, Rich Luchini and their wonderful golf staff did the great and efficient job organizing and running the tournament that everyone has come to expect. As usual, the post-golf cocktail party and dinner provided a perfect conclusion for an enjoyable afternoon, with both adding new and delicious culinary treats to the already great menu. Thank you to our super chef and staff. Co-chairs Carol Smith and Joanne Weinbach continue to provide us with lovely and successful events. Winners were not available at time of print… look for them in next month’s issue!

Ladies Golf Member Guest

The first Ladies’ Member Guest Golf Tournament of the 2016-2017 season, on February 7, was a resounding success in every way. The theme of the day, based on the Kentucky Derby, was the Frenchman’s Creek Derby, and everything really did “come up roses.” Wonderful weather provided a great start to the day. There was a large turnout of members, some of whom had up to three guests, with the guests representing forty-seven different clubs. Fifty groups, more than covering both courses, played a shamble format, with everyone hitting from the best drive and each continuing with her own ball from there. The players were divided into four flights, with a longest drive award for each flight. There was also a closest to the pin award for members and guests in each flight. For one closest to the pin, there was no question - - a hole-in-one by Lois Kleinberg on North 13. Following golf was a lovely cocktail party and fabulous luncheon offering a delicious buffet menu with a wonderful

variety of choices. The room was beautifully decorated in line with the theme and all the roses made for a very delightful setting. Even the imaginative dessert followed the theme with a lovely plate highlighted by

an “edible bonnet”. All participants received a gift of a pair of golf shoes that they were able to design themselves. How imaginative! Co-chairs Donna Baron, Dottie Kovel

and Sharon Rocklin and their committee did an absolutely marvelous job, which was supported, as usual, by Frenchman’s Creek’s wonderful golf and culinary staff. Pictures compliment of Norma LIppman

We thank Mimi Bergel for these interviews

WENDY and IRA WEINSTEIN , of Le Havre Drive, are very recent newcomers, having just arrived at Frenchman’s in the beginning of December. Both are originally from Westchester County, New York and still have a home in Scarsdale.

They are the parents of four children – one girl and three boys – whose homes range from Los Angeles to Boston to New York – and are the grandparents of nine, ranging in age from one to seventeen years of age. Now retired, both Wendy and Ira had careers in market research. They are among the many members of Braeburn Country Club up north who have been drawn to Frenchman’s Creek. They looked at various communities in Florida, but during six years of a time share at the neighboring Ritz Carlton, and visiting friends and spending weekends here, they knew Frenchman’s was their first choice. They love the range of activities, the size of the community and the warmth of the Creekers, and after speaking about it for years, are happy to be here.

Welcome to newcomers Connie and Michael Forman of Dijon Way. Connie was originally from Wynnewood, PA and Michael from North Cauldwell, NJ., but they have lived in New York City all their married life. Connie was a 5 th grade teacher at a Solomon Schechter school in Westchester, NY, and is now retired. Michael is still a practicing attorney. They have 2 sons and 2 daughters and are blessed with 10 grandchildren. Golf was a big part of their lives and they belong to Brae Burn Country Club in Westchester. A lot of friends from New Jersey and New York City, as well as Brae Burn, influenced their move to Frenchman’s Creek, and they are very happy with that decision. In addition to golf, they love the outdoor life and fitness activities, and Connie plays bridge and canasta. They take advantage of as much of the cultural activities as they can, such as films, lectures and concerts. With all the friends, old and new, and the activities here, they love Frenchman’s Creek. Sharon and Michael Strongin, of Degas Drive East, are another new couple introduced to Frenchman’s Creek by friends from Brae Burn Country Club in Westchester, NY, the most instrumental of whom were the Kovels. Michael, originally from Long Island, and Sharon, originally from Rhode Island, met as students at Boston University, where Michael was in the six year undergraduate/medical school program. He did his residency at Cornell/New York , and then moved to Scarsdale, where they lived for 30 years. They also had an apartment in New York City. Ten years ago they sold Scars- dale and moved to the Ritz in White Plains. Michael practiced OB/GYN for 40 years, delivering more than 5,000 babies. He was president of the New York Gynecologic Society and Chief of Gynecology at Lenox Hill Hospital. Sharon did a lot of volunteer work and later worked in the office. Their son and daughter-in-law and 2 children live in Michigan and their daughter and son-in-law and three children live in Tampa. They are thrilled with their move here and love every- thing about it -- the activities, mainly golf, bridge and pickleball, and especially the people and the services. We are happy to welcome them to Frenchman’s Creek.

SHERM LEVIE brings us this wonderful article. 75th ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR BAR MITZVAHS

In the fall of 2016, five members of Frenchman’s Creek learned that they were all born within a few days of each other in the last week of January and the first week of February in 1929. They now realize that this year they all will be eighty-eight years old. In addition to having a birthday party, they can now celebrate the 75th anniversary of their joint Bar Mitzvahs. SEYMOUR BRODE, DON BROWN, MORT CORWIN, SHERM LEVIE and FRANK SPITALNY not only planned a gala dinner in the Grill Room with their mates, but thought that they would recall something about that precious day. After all, it was a few short weeks after Pearl Harbor which day was certainly not as important as the “Bar Mitzvah Boys” own ‘ day of infamy’ that took place in early 1942. Although abbreviated in this article, here are some of their recollections of the day that they shared. Seymour celebrated his Bar Mitzvah in a very conservative synagogue during the High Holidays that year. The congregation stood up and started applauding. That action was certainly unheard of in that conservative synagogue. In looking around, the congregants noticed Hank Greenberg, the star Detroit Tiger baseball great had arrived for Rosh Hashanah services. What a great memory for a thirteen-year-old. Don on the other hand had his Bar Mitzvah in a very reform synagogue. He studied his reading from the Torah with his rabbi for almost a year. As Don recalls, it was a short portion and he easily memorized it. On the day of the Bar Mitzvah, Don’s rabbi was called away and the head rabbi of Washington, D.C. came as a substitute, When the time came for Don to recite his portion, the substitute rabbi started to search for the correct location in that weeks’ Torah reading. Don realized the rabbi’s dilemma, so started to recite his easily memorized Torah portion, amazing the astonished substitute head rabbi who was still looking for the correct place. MORT remembered that his Bar Mitzvah was attended by relatives and friends of his parents. He doesn’t recall any of his own friends being there. He did, however, receive several gifts from those who were at the synagogue. Although the gifts were varied, there were two that were most prominent and often repeated. Being right after Pearl Harbor, there were many $25.00 U.S. War Bonds. The second were several Parker 51 Fountain Pens. Mort presented each of the “Bar Mitzvah Boys” with their own personal gift of a brand new pen.

75th ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR BAR MITZVAHS continued

SHERM and his wife, Bubbles, went to the same grade school and were high school sweethearts. Over more than eighty years and the sixty-six years of their marriage, they managed to accumulate a lot of memorabilia kept in a corrugated box in the basement of their Chicago home. Their grade school report cards, high school yearbooks and loads of pictures starting from their own kindergartens to their children’s birthdays. There was some other meaningful junk like the menu from their wedding. When they moved permanently to Frenchman’s Creek three years ago, that accumulation was brought to their home and was kept in the closet of one of their guest bedrooms. Last summer, they decided to see what great things they saved for over eighty years. On one eventful Sunday, they spent most of the day looking and laughing. In an envelope, they also found Sherm’s invitation to his Bar Mitzvah Inviting relatives and his parent’s friends and of all things, his seventy-five year old Bar Mitzvah speech. A copy of that speech was presented to everyone present at the grill room dinner. FRANK could only remember one thing from his Bar Mitzvah. Although he performed the usual synagogue ritual, his parents in celebration of the great event took him on a holiday to Miami Beach, Florida. They went by the train, The Orange Blossom Special, going from New York to Miami. While in central Florida the train was hit head on by another train. Frank was thrown down, bruised but not seriously hurt. His parents were shaken up but also not seriously hurt. To relate this to other “Bar Mitzvah Boys” at the dinner, Frank searched on the computer through the files of local newspapers looking for information about a Florida train wreck sometime early in February 1942. He showed us an article in the newspaper detailing the train wreck.

It was so much fun recalling their formative years, they decided to do it again celebrating their 75 plus one.

Editor note may it continue for many years hence.

RHODA AND ALAN EDELMAN for mixing up two of their three simchas (happy events). They became GIGI’S, which is great grandparents February 23 rd when their grandchildren Melanie and Joe Young had a baby girl, Raegan Penneys Young weighing in at 7 pounds 13 ounces and she is 20 inches long. The grandparents are Jonathan and Diana Edelman who reside in Merion, Pennsylvania. Their grandchildren Jackie and Steven Catania were married in Philadelphia on December 31, 2016 (New years eve).

Double header for RHO and ALAN EDELMAN, their grandson, Ben Edelman, has the lead understudy role for a new Broadway Show, SIGNIFICANT OTHER. The previews have already begun. Nana and Papa hope he gets to play the lead role sometimes.

Speaking of GIGI’S, congratulations to SHIRLEY GOLDBERG and ANNE NEUSTADTER, the grandmother. Shirley cleverly writes: The movie” 500 Days of Summer,” written by Scott Eric Neustadter, portrays his own early life. Portrayed in his movie is an actor and actress, Tom and Summer. Tom is soon rejected and meets a new girlfriend, named “Autumn.” The movie is adorable and successful. So after “Summer,” we welcome Scott and Lauren Neustadter’s baby, my great granddaughter and Anne’s granddaughter, RILEY AUTUMN. She was born Tuesday, February 7, 2017 weighing in at 6 pounds 7 ounces.

Kudos to entertainment Chairs: Judy Konigsberg and Ethel Schultz for providing a great evening for couples and singles, Valentines Day 2017. Michael Cavanaugh was superb coming on stage with energy and enthusiasm and stayed that way for 1 1/2 hours. He played Billy Joel and Neil Diamond and a few surprises. The buffet

dinner offered a variety of different selections .

Every woman attending received a red rose upon leaving!

Hopefully they will have another great evening planned for 2018.
