Re-cuts always ‘good as new’? The main argument against re-cutting inserts in a wire mill’s internal die room is that very few of these re-cuts are returned to an ‘as good as new’ condition. Most die rooms simply lack the production and/or inspection equipment to guarantee consistent control of the many important parameters in a wire die. After extensive studies of thousands of re-cut dies received from hundreds of wire mills around the world, Paramount has concluded that very few industry re-cuts are

Replacing the internal die shop Ace American Wire Die has been in operation for over 25 years, manufacturing carbide round and shaped dies with finished dimensions from .025" up to 6". Ace American’s shaped dies include standard shapes, spline, keystone and trapezoids. The company stocks a diverse inventory of carbide nibs to anticipate customer die needs. The company's engineering department has over 50 years of die-making experience and over 20 years of drawing experience. Engineers working for Ace American have developed and manufactured many different geometric configurations of dies to give the best outcome with a variety of material grades and incoming sizes. Many companies are downsizing or even eliminating their internal die shops. In response to greater demands, Ace American has increased its die maintenance department, assuming the role of an internal die shop for many customers by maintaining their current die inventory. manufactured properly to ensure consistent and optimal drawing performance. The wire die is a very important part of the wire drawing process and the same level of consistency needs to be maintained with both new and re-cut inserts. Paramount believes it has developed both the process and equipment necessary to ensure that re-cut inserts are returned to an ‘as good as new’ condition.

Another key argument against internal re-cutting is that most die rooms do not have the volume per die size, or even overall volume, to make re-cutting efficient. Most die rooms re-cut only a few dies to a given size at any time, so require constant changeover.

Also, many die rooms do not remove the ideal amount of carbide stock with every re-cut. Processing over 1,000,000 used inserts every year, Paramount Die has highly efficient and automated production runs and claims to remove the optimal level of material to guarantee clean up of the wear zone without removing more material than is necessary.
