FALL 2018

BOARD of DIRECTORS

and committed board of directors oversees the operations of the clinic, freely giving of their time and talents. It is a "place" where donors can help make a significant impact on the overall health of our community. Most importantly, it is a "place" where deserving patients can come and know that they will receive only the highest level of quality healthcare, with dignity and respect, provided by our wonderful corps of healthcare professionals. Lastly, it is a "place" that provides a true sense of community to all of those involved.

FROM THE PRESIDENT:

As our recent and successful building campaign draws to a close, on behalf of everyone involved with the Bradley Free Clinic, I wanted to say thank you to our donors. Thanks to you, we now have

a new roof overhead, our new HVAC system will soon be in place, and many other much needed and significant improvements will be yet to come. But as I reflected on the campaign, it struck me that Bradley is actually much more than a "building," it is a "place." It is a "place" where volunteers come together to support our mission and provide badly needed services to those we serve. It is a "place" where our dedicated staff puts in long hours to make sure that the clinic runs smoothly. It is a "place" where a talented This "place" will soon be celebrating our 45th anniversary, which is incredible. We could have never reached this milestone without the help of our amazing "community" of supporters. As the building campaign ends, and we look to "building" for our future, please know that this "place," the Bradley Free Clinic, will forever strive to be the very best that we can be. Randall Rhea, M.D . | PRESIDENT Changing the Lives of Our Patients

William Koloda and his wife have been patients at Bradley Free Clinic (BFC) for almost three years. Before he was a patient, Mr. Koloda worked in telecommunications for both AT&T and CenturyLink. He worked for 27 years, 20 years at AT&T in Charlotte and seven years for CenturyLink. Unfortunately, Mr. Koloda suffered two major heart attacks in a short time period. After the second major attack, he had permanent heart damage and short-term memory loss. He lost his job and his insurance. The Kolodas have four children, quadruplets who are now 20 years old. Some of their children were patients

at BFC. Mr. Koloda says that they are starting to get full-time jobs with benefits, so only one still visits the BFC. He says they will always know where to turn when something catastrophic happens in their lives. Mr. Koloda has been using our medical and pharmacy services as needed and has stayed on top of his condition. When asked about his overall health after coming to the BFC, Mr. Koloda made sure to tell us that we wouldn’t be having this delightful conversation if not for the Bradley Free Clinic. In his own words, “The Bradley Clinic has been such a blessing to us… the administration staff and the medical staff — they’ve been absolutely wonderful. They’ve been so caring and just the best; it’s really hard to put into words.”

MISSION STATEMENT The Mission of the Bradley Free Clinic is to provide free, compassionate, and high-quality medical, dental, pharmaceutical, and preventive healthcare services for Roanoke Valley residents who lack the resources necessary to maintain their health and productivity, using volunteer healthcare professionals.

Message from Our Executive Director

Bradley Free Clinic is held in the highest regard by the communities we serve and that continues as we approach our 45th anniversary. We earned respect because of the quality of care our dedicated and compassionate volunteers and staff provide, along with a deep caring for our patients’ overall well- being. It’s about caring for their whole health and doing everything we can to assist with many of the obstacles they face in their daily lives. With the community’s support, we always try to find a way to help and that makes the Clinic quite unique. For example, donors Bill Doughty and Kathy

Guy provide the Reilly Fund, a resource our patients can access when unexpected expenses arise. The Clinic always held a special place in Bill and Kathy’s hearts and they understand the need to care for the whole patient. Sadly, we lost Bill this past year and miss him dearly. The Reilly Fund was established to help patients in immediate need of assistance including help with food, gas, or even a utility bill.

Recently, one of our patients lost his job, needed food for his family, and was in a deep depression. He was transported to the ER in a suicidal state, where he was cared for, released, and prescribed medication for his depression. He is now being treated at the Clinic and is living a more productive life. When he came to us that first day and had no money for food to feed himself or his wife, we provided him with Kroger gift cards. He started to cry and said that he never expected such a warm and caring gesture at a time when he needed it most. This unique, whole-patient style of health care isn’t the result of a business-first approach. While it’s important to keep a roof over our heads, this care for our patients comes from the heart and soul of the Clinic. The heart and soul of the Clinic is in the mission and the mission is in the heart of every volunteer and staff person that has been associated with the Clinic for the last 44 years. Thank you for always putting our patients first! Kathy Guy (left) and Bill Doughty (right) with their beloved dog, Reilly.

Construction/Building Improvements

Bradley Free Clinic is undergoing some significant physical improvements! High patient volume and traffic over the past 28 years have taken a toll, and our building is now at a critical level of disrepair, with many large renovations needed at the same time. Through the building campaign, donors, and grants from several private foundations, we have the funds in place to modernize our clinic and make all necessary repairs! Over the next several months, BFC will receive a new roof, four new HVAC units, a new patient check-in window, updated security measures to ensure staff safety and patient privacy, ADA- compliant accessible doorways and a ramp, basement repairs, minor room reconfigurations, and new paint and flooring throughout. These renovations will ensure BFC meets clinical care quality standards and patient safety. During the building renovations, BFC is modernizing our health records system by replacing the current paper records system with a comprehensive Electronic Health Record. This is a necessary task that will increase efficiency and promote patient care continuity for Bradley Free Clinic’s 1,900+ patients. As part of this process, it was necessary to upgrade information technology capabilities and add new computers for staff and volunteers. This year and next, Bradley Free Clinic is striving to make these much needed renovations to our building and IT infrastructure to further our mission and provide the highest-quality free healthcare services in a state-of-the-art environment. Keeping our patients in mind, we believe this will ensure the delivery of the dignified healthcare services these individuals would otherwise go without. Projected expenses for these repairs total $284,250.

Docs Rock Fashion 2018 was another great success thanks to our volunteer docs, our retailers, and, of course, our sponsors. A special thanks to our returning Diamond Sponsor, Johnson Orthodontics! The goal of Docs Rock Fashion has been to connect with doctors in the community while having fun and raising money for the Clinic. The first year we had 35 doctors volunteer and this past year we had 33 walk out of their comfort zone and into the spotlight! Some of the doctors have been volunteering here for as long as they can remember, but some are new to the Bradley Free Clinic. It was remarkable to have so many volunteer their time to perform for such a great cause. Our docs definitely ROCK! Thanks to all of you who helped us raise $75,000 for the Clinic and $13,000 towards our building campaign, totaling $88,000. A special thanks to both of our co-hosts, David Page of Q99 and Neesey Payne of WDBJ7, and our DJ, Tommy Page. Finally, a huge thank you to our Bradley Society ladies, an incredible team of volunteers consisting of Pat Houghton, Winn Ballenger, Owen Weaver, Estelle Avner, Preeti Kaushal, Megan McNamara, Ericka Jenkins, and Rebecca Wessinger, along with Evonne Plebuch, Hilary Sweeney, Rebecca Sweeney, Garland Gravely, and Avery. They worked tirelessly and did a fantastic job! DOCS ROCK FASHION 2018

Tribute to Dr. Kevin Kelleher 2018 marked a milestone in board leadership. After 36 years, Dr. Kevin Kelleher stepped down from his position as Medical Director. In Kevin’s words, “It is the right time to pass on the leadership of this committee.” We are very grateful to Kevin for serving in this capacity, advising the staff on clinical operations, and making decisions regarding our patients’ care. establishing malpractice protection, resulting in the passage of the Kennedy-Kasselbaum provision for Free Clinic Malpractice Protection, aka The Good Samaritan Act, along with numerous accomplishments furthering the efforts of free clinics throughout the United States. His commitment and dedication have been exemplary, and his vision for the clinic has been invaluable. We would like to thank and recognize him for serving the Clinic and the patients as the Medical Director and board member for so many years. Don’t worry though, Kevin is not leaving us! He will continue volunteering to care for patients at the Clinic. Drs. Jack and Karen Perkins have filled the positions of volunteer Medical Director(s) and board member(s). As you can see, it takes two to fill Kevin’s shoes.

Community Health Worker Joe Denfield As we continue to address our patients’ needs both inside and outside the Clinic, their overall well-being is our priority. Our new Community Health Worker (CHW), Joe Denfield, is able to work one-on-one with our patients to address barriers to care such as employment, housing, transportation, food access, and telephone communication. As our CHW, Joe will work to decrease social isolation for patients and educate them on how to lead a healthy lifestyle with better nutrition, chronic disease prevention, and physical activity.

Joe has been working with us since July 1 and is originally from New Brunswick, New Jersey. He graduated from Rutgers University with a double major in Sociology and Communications and a minor in Criminology. Joe was hired as part of a Healthy Roanoke Valley United Way Grant placing CHWs in the community, and we share him with the Roanoke Rescue Mission. The grant provides each healthcare facility with a CHW trained to conduct home visits to assess a patient’s need and connect them to resources to assist social determinates to healthcare. We are both excited and lucky to have Joe here and look forward to his continued successful interactions with our patients!
