“I told my mom for Mother’s Day I wanted to try my best to win this rodeo for you,” said Nobriga, 31, who took home $1,816 for the win. “It all worked out. I was able to do it. It was pretty cool.” Nobriga is fromKealakekua, Hawaii. Growing up on a small, family ranch, he and his sister and cousins are the first in their family to take competition to the next level. He’s the first to get to the ProRodeo level. Last season, while Nobriga was on his permit, Ken and Vicky Cook in California helped him try to weave his way through the rodeo world. This season, he’s competing in the Turquoise Circuit and often stays with his friend Keri Borowski in Queen Creek, Ariz. But he also stays with other friends close to other rodeos. “I always wanted to come and compete,” Nobriga said. “Being that I was in Hawaii it wasn’t set up for me to be here. I stayed there for a while and finally I got good support and got things put together where I could send horses over and be able to go around and do some rodeos. “I’m pretty happy to be here doing it. It’s a really cool feeling. I have no regrets.” Nobriga was riding his 8-year-old horse Rage. Nobriga and his sister, Nahe, bred and raised Rage. Nobriga has no plans to take Rage and head back to Hawaii. “I do miss my family and all my friends back at Hawaii, but the longer I’m here, the more I think I’ll be here longer,” he said. “I’m not sure when I’ll go back.”
