Perchlorate • Naturally in the environment – in nitrate and potash deposits + can be formed in the atmosphere and precipitate into soil and groundwater • Environmental contaminant – from nitrate fertilizers + use and disposal of ammonium perchlorate (used in rocket propellant, explosives, fireworks etc .) • Disinfection by-product (from hypochlorite) • EFSA dietary risk assessment (2014): vegetables & vegetable products + milk & milk products identified as the most important contributors in the chronic exposure assessment • Commission Recommendation (EU) 2015/682 on the monitoring of the presence of perchlorate in food – LOQ not to exceed:
• 2 μ g/kg in foods for infants and young children • 10 μ g/kg in other foods • 20 μ g/kg in dried herbs, spices, tea and herbal and fruit infusions
• Commission Regulation (EU) 2020/685 amending Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006 as regards maximum levels of perchlorate in certain foods
