AOAC Cannabis Analytical Science Program 

AOAC Cannabis Analytical Science Program (CASP) Newsletter: May 21, 2019 CASP Working Group Updates Microbiology Working Group  Co-chaired by Patrick Bird and Julia Bramante.  Working group has met on May 2nd and May 15th.  The working group decided to focus on Aspergillus to start. o Aspergillus is much more commonly found in cannabis than Listeria monocytogenes or Salmonella species.  Will adopt and adapt current food microbiology method evaluation guidelines. This will require many samples, but will help build credibility with the food community.

Chemical Contaminants in Cannabis Working Group

 Led by Susan Audino, S.A. Audino & Associates.  Met by web conference on May 3.  Decided to revisit the issue of pesticide detection; formed a sub-group to revisit AOAC SMPR 2018.011.  Sub-group is organizing a team of 3-5 labs to attempt to meet the SMPR and provide data on appropriate action levels.

Cannabinoids in Consumable Working Group

 The working group met on May 6 th and May 21 st , led by Holly Johnson, AHPA.  The group decided to focus on creating an SMPR for cannabinoids quantitation in hemp plant materials.  The working group discussed the possibility of developing a white paper on how to calculate and report THC content in various materials, specifically with methods that measure THC and THCA separately.

David Schmidt (AOAC INTERNATIONAL Executive Director) will be speaking about CASP during the IFT19 FEED YOUR FUTURE meeting at 1:30pm on June 3, 2019 in room 298 – 299 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, LA, USA. Scott Coates (Senior Director, AOAC Research Institute & AOAC CASP Program Lead) will be speaking about CASP at the FDA Public Hearing on Scientific Data and Information about Products Containing Cannabis or Cannabis-Derived Compounds. The hearing Is scheduled for 8 AM EDT to 6 PM EDT on May 31, 2019. The hearing will take place at the Great Room (Rm 1503) in the Conference Center (Bldg 31) at the FDA White Oak Campus in Silver Spring, Maryland, USA. Coates will also be speaking at the AFDO Annual Educational Conference meeting on June 26, 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
