Ipswich in Summer 2019-2020

Ipswich spelling whiz Timothy Fox knows his pail from his pale and can spell tricky words like circumference and matriarchy. The St Augustine’s College student achieved the highest score in Queensland for Year 3 spelling in this year’s NAPLAN test. Timothy said a love of reading books and assistance from his school teachers helped him with his spelling and that extended to the home too. “Most days when I get home from school, I do my chores then start reading straight away. I love all books but mainly fantasy, thriller or horror.” he said. He recently learned the phonetic alphabet using his great memory with the help of his dad one afternoon after school. “My mum read all the Harry Potter books to me and now I mainly read by myself but sometimes I will go into my older brother’s room and we will read together.” Principal Graham Meertens praised this fantastic achievement and said when speaking with Timothy it was quite clear he had an advanced vocabulary and immense love of reading. St Augustine’s College’s Assistant Principal for Curriculum Katrina Bartholomew said the college community was excited to share not only in Timothy’s NAPLAN success, but also the rest of the students who took part in the national testing program. “In addition to Timothy’s exciting news, we are very proud of our Year 9 cohort, which achieved above the Queensland average in all areas and above the Australian average in four out of five areas,” she said.
