The system not only reduces the time for changeover, but once a product has been made for the first time, all the final settings are saved and used the next time the same product is made with minimal scrap production. Design of stands and transmission The mill is designed to maximise strength and rigidity of all parts, in particular the stands, to permit welding of high strength material up to X80, and, in few cases, also above. Minimisation of scrap Once production of one tube size is complete, when the butt weld with the next different size strip is at the entry end of the mill, the mill is stopped to cut the strip. When the mill is emptied, all strip into the breakdown and fin pass section of the mill will become scrap. OTO can supply a flying shear located upstream of the mill to cut the strip at the butt weld without stopping the mill. Apart from the time saving this allows for changeover, all the strip into breakdown and fin pass section is welded at the same production speed into a good tube. Conclusions OTO’s experience in the field of API tubes is increasing every year starting from 2007. Today OTO is one of the few suppliers in the world capable of ensuring the provision of a facility for the production of pipe API as well as the services of installation, commissioning and training of staff. OTO is also able to provide advice to a company and its clients to obtain certification to produce API.
