Plant inspected ACOUSTICEYE’S non-invasive acoustic pulse reflectometry (APR) tool has been used to carry out the inspection of a reduction gas preheating furnace at an iron smelting plant. The inspection was performed on a bundle of 114.3mm (4½") ID tubes made of heat resistant austenitic Fe-Ni-Cr alloy. Pitting/wall loss was quickly detected in two of the tubes. Acknowledging the opportunity to shorten inspection cycle time with this technique, the customer’s engineering team recommended APR as a screening technique to be complemented by other methods only on suspected tubes.

STEELCRAFT Tool Company has celebrated its 70 th anniversary. Originally launched in 1943 as an industrial cutting tools producer, Steelcraft Tool Company eventually began to produce high quality cut-off, cross-cut and end finishing blades and has specialised in these tools for more than 50 years. Steelcraft is now a leader in high-speed cut- off blades for the tube and pipe industry. Over the years the company has proven itself to be an industry innovator by introducing and being the first to use several advancements including the use of M-2 high-speed steel for increasing blade life, strength and flatness. Until the use of M-2 high speed steel by Steelcraft, standard tool steel was the accepted choice by the industry for producing tube and pipe cut-off blades. Steelcraft saw the benefit of using this superior steel for increasing blade life and durability, and ensuring blade flatness. The use of blade coatings to increase lubricity was another achievement – Steelcraft was the first blade producer to offer titanium nitride coating to the tube and pipe industry. Over the years, many additional coatings have been added to the arsenal of options for tube and pipe producers. It also introduced resharpening and recoating of blades. Steelcraft was the first manufacturer to offer resharpening and recoating of cut-off blades. This service allows a blade user to extend the life of the tooling. Ms Nan (Glaser) Marr, whose family has been at the helm of Steelcraft Tool Company for more than 50 years, beginning with her father Jack Glaser, believes that the dedication and know-how of her staff is one of the most important reasons that Steelcraft has endured over the years. “We have seen many companies come and go but Steelcraft has remained the leader because of our dedication to producing high quality tooling,” she said.
