ISSUE

Ryan Krauklis EM Solutions Manager Wagner Equipment Co.

Thanks for checking out the Wagner Review. Our big topic this quarter? Technology. Love it or hate it, it’s here to stay. And Wagner offers CAT’s latest products that boost efficiency, increase revenue and reduce cost. A little resistant? Feel like you don’t need a smartphone to lift dirt? I understand. I started at Wagner almost ten years ago. And back then, looking at a tractor. . . I never thought “technology”. But when I joined the equipment management team, I realized how powerful technology, the collection of data and analytics could be. Tractors are loaded with computer driven tech. Product Link, the tractor’s mini-computer, transfers data into the cloud, blends the data with other information and makes it visible at the desktop or on a mobile phone through VisionLink. Data collected from the machine and analyzed can help you maximize efficient utilization and ultimately profitability. Since 2016, 98% of CAT products are ProductLink factory-installed. Since 2011, Wagner has been using that technology to help customers manage fleets, as well as their own. I’ve seen VisionLink (page 9) provide instant insight into a jobsite productivity issue, save a customer thousands in hidden expenses , streamline service and maintenance appointments, help an inexperienced operator get the most out of their machine, discover illegal use of an excavator, reduce idle time from 50% to below 10% across their fleet, and help operators stay healthy by measuring sleep and fatigue levels. In partnership with CAT, our goal is to provide not only safe, efficient and high quality machinery, but add value to your business operation. Technology is helping us do that. And these days, hi-tech isn’t just at the office, it’s in our homes. My daughters use iPads and Chrome for their homework. Digital is simply in their DNA and I can’t help them if I don’t keep pace. You can too. Thanks for your business and thanks for reading the Wagner Review. Warmly, Ryan

Wagner + CSU = Hands-On Experience DOING GOOD

production cycles. And when they’re trying to figure out how many buckets of dirt it takes to maximize project efficiency, a simulated experience makes a difference. Jeff Wilkes is the heavy construction faculty chair and teaches several classes: Equipment & Methods, Introduction to Road, and Soils Engineering. He says the excavator simulator has become an important hands-on experience of these classes, and they haven’t even fully leveraged it’s potential. “This technology helps my students understand the different productivity rates between a skilled operator and non-

Wagner Equipment Co. has been a long-time partner of the Construction Management program at Colorado State University, in Fort Collins, Colorado. In 2016, after hearing that CSU had an excavator simulator on their wish list, Wagner took action. “It turned out that one of our partners was upgrading their Simulator,” said Wagner Marketing Manager Chad Nielsen. “So we purchased the old one.” CSU’s Construction Management program, including nearly 800 students, doesn’t train students to operate machinery. But they do teach them about

VisionLink: Save Man Hours and Boost Profitability CASE STUDY PROFILE HEI Civil, founded in 1973, is an accomplished civil general contractor with a wide range of construction

machine. Location, service date, service report, idle time, hours worked, operator identification, fuel gauge and much more.

projects including highways, commercial buildings, residential initiatives, oil fields, dams, reservoirs and golf courses. HEI buys their equipment almost exclusively through Wagner. PROBLEM HEI’s long-time challenges were centered around a pretty small issue: oil changes. With 120 machines across the front range, they had a lot of maintenance to manage. With the current system, they would determine service appointments based on the hours billed to a particular machine. But while an operator may have “worked” 10 hours, that didn’t mean the machine was running for 10 hours. This system didn’t account for downtime, lunches, weather delays or meetings. At some point, stickers became the only surefire way to know when a machine was last serviced. “We do everything else top notch,” said Adam Williams, general maintenance manager. “Our trucks run well. We hire the best employees. And my CEO is diligent about investing in this company to improve operations and customer value. It didn’t make any sense that we would be inefficiently tracking HEI researched several systems. Verizon provides a GPS tracker for every machine, but it wasn’t a robust solution and Verizon was a cell phone company—they didn’t know construction. Fleetmatics was another possibility, but installation was complicated and didn’t flow well with HEI’s current accounting platform. Enter CAT’s VisionLink system–an internal software solution that tracks multiple data points for any given our machines.” SOLUTION

Plus, VisionLink already worked with HEI’s accounting. The box took just 10 minutes to install. Boom—a unified system. “We already know Wagner has a great partnership with them. They did an excellent job putting together a finance package to accommodate our situation.” RESULTS The VisionLink box generates daily reports and real-time updates, analytics and maps, which appear on a manager’s computer screen. The software is intuitive and the mobile app is even easier. No more digging through time cards to pay the right municipality tax. No more lost invoices. No more communication breakdowns between equipment and accounting. But it’s not just moment-to-moment convenience. It’s man hours saved. Says Williams: “We just got back 15 hours a week in man-power. Not to mention fuel. Instead of driving to Longmont to find an excavator that turns out to be in Castle Rock, we just glance at a screen.” And big picture profitability is also a benefit. “When you know exactly how many hours a machine as worked, you can better determine how many hours it has left. In this way, it informs our purchasing decisions and that saves us thousands of dollars.”

START YOUR ENGINE: AN EXCAVATOR YOU CAN START FROM AN APP ON YOUR SMART PHONE. T H E N E W P L A T F O R M F O R T H E F U T U R E : CAT 320GC, CAT 320, CAT 323

Body and swing sensors on the 320 and 323 excavators enable the operator to create virtual E-fences and E-ceilings to prevent the boom or bucket from striking surrounding objects or swinging out into traffic.

Sensors on the bucket, stick, and boom can automate the digging process resulting in perfect slopes and trenches.

The standard 2D dig assist system automates the position of the bucket to give you the ability to dig to a precise depth and contour.

10 | T he Wagner Review

All three of Caterpillar’s new Next Generation excavators feature a radically new hydraulic system driven by a “digital heart.” The 320 and 323 (pictured) models offer automated digging and positioning technology in addition to payload weighing.

With the myEquipment app, you can start the engine with a smart phone. Caterpillar also enlarged the cab and improved the sightlines to the operator’s left. Special attention was paid to the design and the more durable seat fabric. And there is an 8-inch monitor inside that is touch screen with a smart phone.

Every component that generates heat has its own on-demand electric fan and radiator, resulting in optimum temperatures and reduced parasitic losses on the engine.

A rear facing camera helps improve safety.

CAT Smartband: Safety Just Got Smarter PRODUCT REVIEW

Big Smartband Benefits Makes safety a shared responsibility. By offering data on sleep and mood, the Smartband empowers workers to manager their own fatigue. Improves shift efficiency and reduces accidents. The Smartband detects patterns and informs decisions about work schedules, travel periods and accident reports. Prevents long-term health issues. With rich, data-backed insights, you can design treatment programs for worker conditions before they become chronic. CAT fatigue experts can help you integrate the Smartband and FAST so you can effectively leverage the data— and make a difference for your company. This high-tech tool may just be coming on the scene, but watch for the DSS software integration with multiple partner systems in coming years, helping companies avoid accidents and monitor driver conditions. It’s not exactly predicting the future, but it’s close.

Some CAT customers are also using the Smartband with a complimentary driver safety system (DSS), which includes dashboard cams that monitor hard braking, swerves and other anomalies.

At Wagner, we strive to remember that a good night’s sleep is critical for not only human health, but workplace safety and operational performance. Are your employees—or your safety record—at risk? While experts typically recommend eight to nine hours of sleep a night for adults, an estimated four in ten Americans get less than six hours of sleep a night. Medical studies have related lack of sleep to health problems and cognitive impairment. In our increasingly complex world, where we’re often overscheduled, fatigue management is a priority. But we know life is complicated. This isn’t about putting higher demands on operators. It’s about providing solutions for better rest, better alertness levels and safer operations. Introducing CAT Smartband Recently featured in EquipmentWorld, the Cat® Smartband is a simple unobtrusive Fitbit-like device that feeds data into a software program that determines when a worker is suffering from lack of sleep or fatigue.

How it Works The Smartband fits snugly around a worker’s wrist, measuring their motion with an internal 3D accelerometer. From a person’s sleep and wake patterns, the Smartband receives data on levels of alertness and effectiveness. When Smartband data is combined with the Fatigue Avoidance Scheduling Tool (FAST), you can actively identify, manage and reduce risk by modeling roster changes, travel periods and accident reports.

Find out how to implement the Cat Smartband into your safety program to manage the risk of fatigue and empower workers with shared responsibility. Visit www.cat.com/en_US/support/safetyservices/products/smartband.html for more information.

Ways to Get Workers to Embrace Technology

BEST PRACTICES

4. Get your leadership on. Throughout the transition, show your humility. Empathize with your team. Use the tool often and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. They need to know that you’re all in this together. 5. Find influencers. Use this as an opportunity to compliment workers and elevate them to tech- ambassador status. Ask them to help with cultural adoption. Be sure and choose employees who are team-players and good communicators–they can make a big difference in adoption.

solution. Consider what’s most important to you, your workforce and your culture. 2. Customize your training. Create a long-term plan and phased approach for transition and training. If you have a multi-generational workforce, cater to different learning styles. Try webinars. Offer online tutorials. Set up live trainings. Then gather feedback. Learning a new tool is as much about skill as it is habit. 3. Make your pitch personal. When you announce a new system, emphasize the benefits at a personal level. You want employees to understand what’s in it for them—not the company. What are they struggling with on the job? How will this make their job easier?

1. Choose tech wisely. Take your time. It’s critical that the software is intuitive. Always leverage free trial periods to compare tools. Never sacrifice simplicity for added features. And remember—there isn’t a perfect
