FRESHMAN

CLASS

In September of 1959 the latest group of freshmen arrived at S.D.C.W.

The largest class in our history, they came from all over the United States,

from Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, and Japan. The week of their arrival

was a busy one with registration, meeting roommates, fun at the campus

fashion show, and various other activities comprising" Freshman Week."

The student body entertained our newcomers with a beach party at La

Jolla Shores where they learned "Alcala," our school song.

The excitement of the first few days soon settled as classes began in

earnest. October 30th was the date of the freshman dramatic debut com–

monly known as "Freshman Follies" wherein the student body was invited

to return, for a half hour, to ancient "Roman Daze" that would have

startled Caesar.

A very bright note in the class calendar was the Bishop's party for new

students in early November. The Christmas season brought enthusiastic

freshman sponsorship to the third annual Toy Drive. The spirit of giving

seemed to prevail as freshmen assisted with the eighth Christmas Pageant,

and later strongly supported this year's Catechetical Guild.

Semester break saw the day students entertaining the residents at Norma

Peck's home. Class officers including Norma Peck, president; Sally Tooley,

vice-president; Martha Spiers, secretary; and Frances Oldak, treasurer,

cooperated in planning the February Supper Dance.
