Industry News

Entering the next generation GALLIUM, approaching three decades in the tube equipment industry, has seen the transition of the industry in a number of fundamental ways: from being based in import-restricted India to the new open-market, from an era with low manpower costs, to one where manpower costs are rapidly increasing, and the steel production capacity of India has increased to 75 million tons. Over the last three decades even the applications of tubes and pipes have gone through major revision. During this period Gallium has seen two generations of leaders who have been the flag bearer of the company. The company, co-founded by AK Dutta and YK Bhatia under the leadership of Mr Dutta, created a wealth of technology through international collaborations. Mr Bhatia consolidated and started market capitalising and carried on improving and introducing critical technologies. The company is now looking ahead to the next generation. Rajesh Meena, an engineer with experience in the equipment industry in general and tube industry in particular, is being identified as the ‘Gen-Next’ leader of Gallium. Coming from a background of machine building to production of pipes, Mr Meena intends to bring in a strong techno-economic perception to the equipment made and supplied in terms of the need of the buyer. It is a mistake to propose technology to a customer that does not pay off for his range of applications and needs. It is important that the right set of technology, automation and tooling is provided so that the capital investment made by the buyer keeps them competitive. With these aims at its core, the company is looking to customise its equipment so that the return on investment of the investor/buyer is kept as a main focus. Gallium wants to break free from the culture of selling equipment that is only high on production, fully automated and highly priced, and move towards equipment that is customised to produce what the specific customer requires as well as automation that suits the skill set of the buyer and with a price that suits their budget. hardness, alloy and some dimensions. Echomac ultrasonic instrumentation and rotaries provide detection of ID/ OD and internal defects in welded or seamless precision drawn tubes made of chrome steel, austenite, titanium alloys, copper and other metals. Ultrasonic technology is mandated by most heat exchanger manufacturers to ensure that only the highest quality tubes will find service in any high- pressure ASME type applications. MAC has also supplied many OCTG producers with Rotoflux flux leakage test systems to comply with critical API 5CT and 5L, and ASTM E570 requirements for API inspection of OCTG products. The Rotoflux can detect defects as small as 5 per cent of the wall on the OD and ID in tube and pipe from 38 to 500mm in diameter. A complete range of standard and custom design handling components and systems are also available from MAC to precisely hold and position test instruments, test coils, rotaries and drives. Software controls allow complete command of test benches and reporting of test results from multiple instruments.

MAGNETICAnalysis Corp (MAC) will be featuring non-destructive test equipment and systems for tube and pipe at Tube India. The company will be exhibiting the MultiMac ® eddy current instrumentation and rotary and a Varimac ® eddy current comparator, at the stand of Inmar Corp, MAC’s representative in India. Complete information on all of MAC’s test systems, including the Echomac ® ultrasonic and Rotoflux ® flux leakage test systems will be

available. MAC recently provided an Echomac ultrasonic inspection system to Ratnamani Metals & Tubes Ltd, a major stainless tube producer in India. MAC eddy current test systems are used to detect transverse, short or longitudinal seam type surface defects in magnetic and non-magnetic tubing used in many applications. The Varimac eddy current comparator provides 100 per cent inspection of fasteners and metal parts for heat treatment,
