1. Painkillers - Over the counter painkillers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen can assist. You could also try some anti

inflammatory and anti bacterial mouth rinses to help numb your gums, while minimizing risk of infection.

2. Ice cream and cold treats - Normally we advise against sugary treats – but just this once should be ok, especially if you brush straight after. An ice block, a bowl of ice cream or milkshake can assist with keeping your mouth cool and help reduce inflammation of the gums. It’s good for the soul too! 3. Cold glass of water - It’s the cheapest, healthiest and easiest way of keeping your mouth clean and cool and your body hydrated at the same time. Fill up your favourite glass or bottle with ice and water and guzzle it down. 4. Orthodontic wax - Your orthodontist should provide you with some wax to help protect the inside of your mouth and lips from any abrasions caused by wires or your brackets. This will help keep your braces feeling smooth, improve your level of comfort and reduce the likelihood of mouth sores. 5. Rinse with warm, salty water - This will keep your gums clean, reduce inflammation and purify any mouth sores which may have started to form. 6. Eat soft foods - Eating soups, soft veggies and pasta for a few days after a check up won’t put as much pressure on your teeth and gums. Browse our online library of the best, braces friendly recipes at our blog at theorthopractice.com.au/blog. 7. Ice pack - T his remedy is an oldie but a goodie – and whether it be an actual ice pack or a bag of frozen peas, applying cold pressure to an area of discomfort should help with any inflammation. Please keep in mind that the above does not constitute medical advice, nor does it take into account each individual’s circumstance with regards to allergies. If symptoms persist, please contact your orthodontist for more information.
