Communicating with confidence across the country

Communicating with Confidence was the theme for Speech Pathology Week in 2019. And it is clear from the response this year that the members of Speech Pathology Australia are not lacking in confidence! The week got off to a flying start when Dr Kate Bridgman appeared on Channel 7’s TV show, The House of Wellness. Dr Bridgman was joined on the show by Harrison Craig (the winner of the second series of The Voice Australia). Harrison talked about his efforts to deal with his stutter. It was rewarding to see the show’s panel promoting the ‘confidence’ theme and highlighting that 1.2 million Australians have communication disability. As in previous campaigns, a key element of the campaign for Speech Pathology Week was the production of a series of case study videos. The focus this year was on the case studies that highlighted how speech pathologist work with their clients to improve their confidence when it comes to communicating. Working closely with Pesel and Carr (public relations agency), the Association was also able to secure media coverage for a number of the case studies highlighted in the video stories. However, it was extremely exciting to see how many speech pathologists were able to secure coverage in their local media (newspaper and radio). A few highlights include Sheree Hammersley securing a front-page story in the Warrnambool Standard newspaper, a radio interview on ABC Broken Hill, and a chat on ‘Nights with John Stanley’ on Radio 3AW. The use of the Speech Pathology Week media release template was clearly in evidence in the range of media secured. In addition, over 420 Speech Pathology Week kits were packed and distributed to Association members who had pre-ordered them online. The kits included magnets, stickers, fliers, pens and the Speech Pathology Week poster. Other materials were downloadable from the Association website, including the Speech Pathology Week poster and email signature. Congratulations must also go to Helena Giannoukas who won the Speech Pathology Week social media competition. Helena won

herself a $150 eftpos voucher. Congratulations Helena! Finally, a huge thank you to all the members who got involved in Speech Pathology Week 2019, in one form or another. The success of the week is directly related to your hard work, efforts and commitment.
