Speak Out OCTOBER 2019 V3 DIGITAL EDITION

Association news

Southern Cross University Speech Pathology Week 2019 This year Southern Cross University students chose to advocate for the speech pathology profession by holding a bake sale where students had the opportunity to use various methods of multi-modal communication to request items. In addition to baked goodies, thickened fluids were available for sampling as well as toothbrushes and toothpaste to promote good oral hygiene. Many students were interested in finding out why thickened fluids are needed and the importance of maintaining oral hygiene.

Library Visit on the Gold Coast The Gold Coast Libraries are great partners when it comes to SP Week. This year member Yvette Dempsey participated in Story Time and Baby Rhyme time and talked to parents and carers about the role of speech pathologists. Member Yvette Dempsey (second from left) with librarians from Gold Coast Libraries.

Yvette said here was plenty of interest and questions to answer. Some parents sought reassurance, others wanted to know how to access speech pathology services. During Speech Pathology Week Yvette also met a member of the public Geoff (pictured right) who was happy to her how speech pathology intervention helped resolve his stutter as a child and effectively changed his life. His new found confidence led to an interest and then a career on the stage as a professional actor and later as a public speaker. A great example of Communicating with Confidence!

Gold Coast based speech pathologist, Lyndal Mayhew, organised an education session for Pre Prep parents early in August 2019.

University of Newcastle students Taylah Rooker and Jessie Martinez get into the spirit of Speech Pathology Week.

University of Sydney students held a stall to help raise awareness for Speech Pathology Week.
