2020 National Tour announced

Working Effectively with Australian Multilingual Children by Dr Gayle Hemsley and Dr Alison Holm

• describe differences between monolingual and multilingual speech and language development; • explain assessment options that assist with differentiating speech and language difference from disorder; • explore the clinical reasoning and differential diagnosis process; • review the evidence for multilingual speech and language intervention; • highlight strategies for supporting multilingual students within the classroom setting; • identify important processes for working effectively with interpreters; and, • provide a framework for managing complex cases where there are risk factors including trauma, social disadvantage, cognitive or hearing impairment. Speech Pathology Australia is thrilled to announce that the 2020 National Tour speakers will be Dr Gayle Hemsley and Dr Alison Holm. Gayle and Alison join the highly regarded list of previous National Tour speakers. Gayle and Alison are certified practising speech pathologists with clinical expertise and extensive research experience in the area of multilingual children’s speech and language development and disorder. National Tour outline Australian speech-language pathologists frequently work with culturally and linguistically diverse children. Unfortunately, many multilingual publications and resources from around the world don’t fit well in an Australian context. Children seeking support have a diverse range of language backgrounds and other risk factors, which make it difficult to develop cultural competence and linguistic understanding. Although achieving culturally responsive, valid, and clinically feasible assessment and intervention for this population can be challenging, it is possible. In this two-day workshop, focusing on working with multilingual children (aged 4-12 years) in an Australian context, Gail and Alison will: • Outline typical development of speech and language for children learning English as an additional language;
