University of Sydney students get into the spirit of Speech Pathology Week.

Students celebrate Speech Pathology Week Speech Pathology Students around the state celebrated Speech Pathology Week with a range of activities based on a number of practice areas. At the University of Newcastle Speech Pathology Australia Student Representatives and the Speech Pathology University of Newcastle Student Society tapped into the the theme of ‘Communicating with Confidence’, by up stalls around campus where students and faculty members could use communication boards to order cakes and sausages. They also organised a morning tea at a local aged care facility to build connections in the community and educate other professionals and residents about the role of speech pathologists. At Macquarie University, final year master’s students invited students and faculty members to try thickened juice, order baked goods using low-tech AAC and participate in a sustained phonation competition. They also gave out lolly bags with ‘articulator’ related lollies with a fact card about Speech Pathology. Speech Pathology Australia Student Representatives from the University of Sydney held a SPAmazing Race on campus. Racers visited a series of stalls to learn about each Speech Pathology range of practice area. The stall activities included decoding a distorted message, taste testing of thickened fluids, practising a voice therapy technique, learning key word sign and using robot talk. The day was an overwhelming success and with many racers reporting that they had learnt something new about communication.
