PAGE 26 THE WEST COAST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE The scent of tradition mingles with wafts of hot buttered popcorn in the basketball arenas of the West Coast Athletic Conference. Though the playing courts possess surnames of "Center" and "Pavilion," they are really "gyms." Gyms, where Naismith's game is still a battle, a rivalry, a common bond between player and fan . WCAC basketball is the game as it was. It's blue collar basketball. It's a tradition still living. THE TRADITION MAKERS The conference, made up of eight private institutions spanning the West from Canada to Mexico, celebrates its 36th year of tradition in 1987-88. The current alignment - Gonzaga University, Loyola Marymount University, Pepperdine University, the University of Portland, Saint Mary's College, the University of San Diego, the University of San Francisco, and Santa Clara University - has remained unchanged for seven years, the longest stint in league history. THE SUCCESS OF MEMBERSHIP In all, 15 different schools have held membership in the WCAC with eight of them winning the league crown at least once. Five current members have put in over 30 years in the conference, accounting for all but five titles. Charter members Santa Clara and St. Mary's have belonged without interruption, while San Francisco suspended their program for three years before starting up again in 1985. St. Mary's 35 years 2 titles Santa Clara 35 years 7 titles Loyola Marymount 32 years 1 title Pepperdine 32 years 7 titles IN THE BEGINNING . .. San Francisco Portland Gonzaga San Diego 32 years 11 years 7 years 7 years 15 titles O titles O titles 1 title The league got its start in 1952 as the "California Basketball Association" with original membership'consisting of San Francisco Bay Area schools: St. Mary's, Santa Clara, San Francisco, San Jose State, and Pacific. Four years later, the league expanded to eight schools by adding Pepperdine, Loyola and Fresno State. It was then that the name changed to the current "West Coast Athletic Conference." The conference has owned an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament ever since its inception as the CBA. The WCAC was purely a California-based league until 1969 when Nevada-Las Vegas and Nevada-Reno signed on, marking the first venture out of the Golden state. Amid much shuffling which witnessed the arrival and departures of UC Santa Barbara, Pacific, and Seattle, Portland joined the league in 1976 and, after UNA departed following the '78-79 year, Gonzaga and San Diego boosted the total membership to its highest of nine teams. Seattle dropped its program to the Division Ill level in 1980, leaving the current conference alignment. Despite all the changes, tradition is still rich in the WCAC. National champi.onship banners hang in USF's Memorial Gym from their back-to-back titles in the mid-fifties. Bill Russell, K.C. Jones, Phil Smith , Dennis Johnson, Bill Cartwright, Kurt Rambis, John Stockton, and Tom Meschery are but a few of the NBA players who warred on WCAC courts in their college days. HOOPS AND MORE Of course, basketball isn't the only WCAC sport. Baseball is fast becoming another tradition maker, with Loyola Marymount advancing to the 1986 College World Series and Pepperdine earning rankings in the national top five. Countless players have gone on to professional careers. The conference also sponsors championships in cross country, soccer, tennis, and golf for men. TWIN SISTER This season is the third for WCAC women's athletics, but the first with conference membership duplicating the men's league. Gonzaga, Portlarid, and St. Mary's all have upgraded their programs from NAIA to NCAA Division I level this season and will fight for league championships in volleyball, basketball, cross country, and tennis. NATIONAL CROWNS Current WCAC members have won 11 NCAA teams championships. San Francisco has eight titles (5 in soccer, 2 in basketball, 1 in tennis), followed by Pepperdine with three (all in volleyball), and Gonzaga with one (boxing). Gonzaga has three individual national champs (all in boxing), Pepperdine two (tennis), San Francisco two (fencing and tennis), and Loyola Marymount one (track). In addition, San Diego picked up a pair of Division II teams tennis crowns and four individual tennis titles while Pepperdine took two championships in outdoor track while at that level. Portland captured their first national title in 1986, running away with the women's NAIA cross country trophy. St. Mary's brought home the 1986 women's soccer championship. THE CHAMPIONS OF 1986-87 Last season was a banner year for WCAC teams. The conference placed three teams in the women's NCAA volleyball tournament (Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, and US International), two in the men's basketball field (Santa Clara and San Diego), and one in baseball (Pepperdine). The conference champions of 1986-87: Baseball-Pepperdine; Basketball-Santa Clara (men), San Francisco (women); Cross Country-Portland (men), USIU (women); Golf-Pepperdine; Soccer-San Francisco; Softball-USIU; Tennis– Pepperdine (men), USIU (women); Volleyball-Loyola Marymount.
