ASSISTANT COACHES
ASSISTANT COACH MIKE LEGARZA Mike Legarza starts his fourth year as an assistant coach at the University of San Diego. In addition to his coaching duties with the big men, Mike is Recruiting Coordinator for the Torero basketball team . In 1984 Mike gained valuable coaching experience under Boyd Grant of Fresno State as the Bulldogs went 25-10. During the 1982-83 season Mike was a graduate assistant at the University of Nevada-Reno under Sonny Allen . As a 1983 graduate of Nevada-Reno, Mike received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education . Besides coaching, Mike played basketball at Nevada-Reno during the 1980-82 seasons.
An All-State guard at Menlo Junior College (Menlo, CA) his sophomore year, Mike led the state in free throw shooting (.93%) and was the team's MVP. Mike prepped at Reno HS where he was All-State in both football and basketball. In the spring of 1987, Mike received his Master of Science degree in Educational Counseling . Recently married , Mike and his wife Kim reside in San Diego.
ASSISTANT COACH CHARLIE KATSIAFICAS Charlie Katsiaficas begins his first year at USD as an assistant coach to Hank Egan . In addition to his coaching duties, he will assist Coach Egan with scouting. Prior to USD, Charlie was the head basketball coach at Pomona-Pitzer College during the 1986-87 season . Coach " Kat," 27, comes to USD after compiling a 15-10 record last year at Pomona-Pitzer College. He served as an assistant varsity coach in 1985-86 when Pomona-Pitzer won the SCIAC championship, and as J.V. coach in 1984-85. A 1983 graduate of Tufts University in Massachusetts, where he played three years on the varsity and was captain as a senior, Charlie also played and helped coach a professional basketball team in Sweden for one year before going to Pomona-Pitzer in 1984. Charlie is single and resides in San Diego.
ASSISTANT COACH GUS MAGEE Gus Magee began his USD coaching career as a graduate assistant to Bernie Bickerstaff, while pursuing his Master's Degree in Social Science. He then joined the USO basketball staff full-time in 1973. Magee also completed his undergraduate degree at USD and was a top basketball player here after completing his tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force. Gus played under legendary Coach Phil Woolpert and holds most of the Toreros rebounding records including 948 career rebounds, most rebounds in a single game (24), most rebounds in a season (344), and the single season rebound average (14.4 rpg) .
Gus was the first USO alumnus to be inducted into the University of San Diego Basketball Hall of Fame. Coach Magee takes great pride in being involved with USO basketball since 1966 and in helping it to grow from a small college program to its current status as a member of the NCAA Division I ranks and the West Coast Athletic Conference. He is currently an Administrative Analyst with the San Diego Public Library System. Gus and his wife Faye have one son , Mark.
