When Work Gets Too Hot... Every year thousands of workers are affected by heat-related illnesses. Heat-related illness occurs when the body cannot cool itself enough to maintain a healthy temperature. When the body is unable to cool itself by sweating, several heat-induced illnesses can occur including heat cramps, heat exhaustion and even heat stroke. Working in a hot environment not only increases the risk of heat-related conditions, but also increases the risk of workplace accidents which are costly not only in terms of workplace recordables, but also to the health of those affected. In order to prevent heat-related illness, OSHA recommends the following: • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water even if you’re not thirsty • Avoid alcohol, caffeine and high sugar drinks that contribute to dehydration • Stay cool by avoiding direct sunlight, wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing, and resting in the shade Personal cooling products, in combination with these best practices, will help keep employees cool, comfortable and productive
