The muscular system How much of the human body is muscle? Muscles make up the bulk of the body and account for about one-third of its weight. What are the two primary purposes of the muscular system? Their ability to contract not only enables the body to move, but also provides the force that pushes bodily substances, such as food and blood, through the body. What is a tendon and a ligament? Tendons connect muscles to bones and ligaments are tough bands of connective tissue that hold the bones of a joint in place. Muscles performing similar, coordinated movements are called muscle groups. Not only do muscles generate body heat, they also help protect much of the body’s underlying bones, blood vessels, nerves and organs. Without the muscular system, none of the other organ systems would be able to function.
