At the time of writing this in early 2021 we are hopefully beginning to see the end of 12 months that no-one could have possibly envisioned – except perhaps a Hollywood blockbuster director. As we went to press with the last issue of Yachting Pages in February 2020, the Mediterranean was just

beginning to go into lockdown to try to stop the spread of COVID-19 and, like everyone else, we were unsure how the year was going to play out. We had just sent 20,000 copies of YP to print at our Italian printers and we had no idea whether they would even be able to remain open in order to

print them, and even if they did, what would the virus do to our ability to distribute those copies? Fast forward two months to May 2020 and our distribution team were, incredibly, only 2 weeks behind our original pre-COVID schedule. Our first day in Monaco on 4th May coincided with the initial ‘de-confinement phase’ and we were able to start our distribution. Monday 11th May saw us move into France, the first day of their initial de- confinement process, and in the two and a half weeks that followed we distributed to 500 yachts and over 200 businesses. A total of 2,500 copies of our new Yachting Pages Mediterranean Edition 2020/21, printed on fully recycled stock and with biodegradable laminates, were out and about and making it into the hands of captains and crew. The situation was initially a little fragile – many businesses were still closed when we started, and the yachts barely active. However, as each day passed, the rate of ‘return to a new normal’ followed a growth curve greater than that of the COVID-19 initial infection rate. By the last day of the

distribution in France, roads were busy, businesses were open again with social- distancing measures in place, and most importantly, the yacht crews were cautiously active and the shipyards were genuine hubs of energy and activity. We moved on from France to Italy, which was widely accepted to have been one of the hardest hit countries by this pandemic in the early stages. Yet spending time there, working our way from Ventimiglia to as far as Porto Azzurro on Elba, the anticipation of getting things ‘back on track’ was evident. As in France, I have never seen all of the shipyards so full. This was partly because of the backlog of work built up when the severest confinement restrictions were in place, and also the continued arrival of pre- planned works on new arrivals. One of the few reasons that yachts could move during the darkest weeks of confinement was in order to move into a shipyard for pre-booked works. The marinas were in most cases at their average capacity for this time of year, although admittedly they were less busy than the shipyards. The number of new

builds coming off the production lines was staggering. At the end of this phase of distribution our team had completed the following deliveries from Marseille to Elba; • 1,000 yachts directly by hand • 500+ business addresses in France & Italy by hand, including ALL of the superyacht-compatible shipyards and marinas from Marseille to Isola d’Elba Our Mailing House had dispatched to; • 37 countries, 300 addresses by mail/ courier • This accounted fora total of 6,500 directories Whilst most of the world was not managing to operate as usual, Yachting Pages had managed to pivot its plans and find ways to safely move between France, Italy, Spain and Mallorca and all the usual shipyards. We were taking carefully thought-out measures to respect the current global situation, protect our staff, contractors and all recipients of our directories and Yachting Pages Delivers (YPD) packs. The delivery packs were being prepared by one individual who was regularly tested. They then spent a minimum of 72 hours sealed, either in transit or simply sitting in a warehouse. Our Field Operations Manager was testing for COVID-19 on an almost daily basis – necessary to be able to travel across international borders. During the yacht deliveries, he was actively socially distancing – asking the crew to wait until he had placed the pack on the passerelle/deck/ quayside before taking it. We had produced a simple sticker which we used to seal each pack, which reassured recipients of the extreme safety measures we were taking. THIS BAG IS COVID SAFE

YACHTING PAGES takes every action necessary to make sure ALL of our YP BAGS are safe to handle. That’s why... SAFE TO HANDLE 4 SAFE TO HANDLE SAFE TO HANDLE 4 SAFE TO HANDLE 4 SAFE TO HANDLE 4 SAFE TO HANDLE FE TO HANDLE 4 SAFE TO HANDLE ALL bags have been

Delivered by ONLY 1 member of staff with a NEGATIVE covid test

Handled ONLY by staff who are regulary tested

packed 3 days prior to delivery

We had also begun to distribute our own branded facemasks for that all-important extra protection. By July we had completed our initial hand distribution around most of the Med and were beginning to re-stock our key distribution outlets (capitaneries, marinas, shipyards and certain key outlets such as busy chandlers) and, as ever, deliver directly on board 500 superyachts with every outing.

This was great news for the marinas and ports in these northern areas – they were busier than average for this time of year. The economic impact of COVID-19 on shipyards seemed negligible. They were simply busier further into the summer months than usual, but the net volume of work remained essentially unchanged. November saw us return to France again. This was the first distribution trip in Europe of

The number of larger yachts present along the northern Mediterranean shores of Italy at this time was considerably higher than previous July trips. This was due to a combination of the national/international lockdowns in March/April creating a delay in the progression of works within the yards (this obviously had a knock-on effect for all planned works moving forwards too) and the normal summer season activity (both charter and owner). Yachts that would normally be further afield, generally south, had not yet started their cruises.

our brand new 2020/21 editions of YP Refit Guide, YP US & Caribbean, and YP Pacific & Australasia. Within 14 days of leaving the printers in Italy we had already delivered to 235 superyachts, and 22 marinas in Florida. 769 copies of the US & Caribbean edition were out in circulation in Florida, 235 are already on board the superyachts and several thousand copies were in mail bags making their way around the globe. A significant proportion had already been delivered. As with the publication of our 2020/21 Mediterranean directory, this initial

distribution phase of the new editions coincided with another peak in COVID-19 infections and the subsequent plethora of restrictions and lockdowns. These did not stop us realising our pre-COVID distribution targets within two weeks of schedule for our Mediterranean Edition, and they were not stopping us now. We checked off France, Italy, Spain and Mallorca again and we actually remained ahead of schedule. Postal

least affected by any economic instability, hence the continuation with scheduled non- essential refits. In the nine months from May 2020 to January 2021, by the time our distribution team returned home, they had completed delivery to: • 4,735 yachts directly by hand • 1,800+ business addresses by hand, including ALL of the superyacht-compatible

dispatches to over 91 countries went out one week earlier than anticipated. In France, the approach to the second wave was considerably more pragmatic than in April. More businesses had adapted and continued to trade albeit in new or altered formats. The refit season in yachting seemed to have been the least affected segment. The second peak of infections coincided with the start of the refit season in Europe but yachts still needed to respect their Lloyds surveys, still required annual and non-routine maintenance, and the UHNWI’s are the

shipyards and marinas from Naples to Cartagena, including Palma de Mallorca • 988 Shipyards • 25,000km • Five countries in person with 91 receiving directories in total • 1,500 addresses by mail/courier • 40,078 directories in total If that wasn’t enough, we also decided to launch a new and improved Yachting Pages website. As the pandemic struck and gave us all time to reflect, we recognised it was the perfect opportunity to innovate and improve

across the business. Wanting to come out of 2020 considerably stronger than we were heading into it, we put months of work into developing a new platform worthy of hosting the superyacht industry’s leading captain and crew resource. Launched in late September, the new YP website is equipped with exciting new features and enhancements, all designed to better serve our clients and our users. The best has to keep striving for more, right? We are not going to lie and say this has been an easy year. It has taken a considerable amount of time, effort and planning to stay ahead of the pandemic and stay in control of our plans. Our sincere thanks and respect go out to our collaborators, all recipients, our clients, marinas, shipyards and yacht crew plus a special mention of thanks to Captain Sébastien from MY Spice Of Life, instagram @yacht_spiceoflife, for his help this year. 2020 has been tough. Without the incredible reception and co-operation from all we meet

and work with none of this would have been possible, so our deepest and sincerest thanks go out to everyone who helped us get our directories on the bridge and in the hands of those who need and use them daily. Our pre-COVID distribution targets and objectives have all been achieved. Even in the cases of our YPD Yacht Show Distribution we managed to create alternative distribution routes when shows were cancelled. This included the use of privately chartered tenders to access the yachts in the Mediterranean and pre-arranged exclusive access into individual marinas in Florida. You cannot say that YP doesn’t go the extra mile for our clients and this year will have been the greatest testament to that. If you are already a client, thank you for joining us and we are glad we got you out there this year by hook or by crook and if you aren’t yet a client... what are you waiting for? Give us a call today!

POSIDONIA SEAGRASS & NEW FRENCH ANCHORING REGULATIONS

Posidonia seagrass is a highly protected species found in the Mediterranean Sea in depths of between 0 and 40 metres. It houses more than 50 species of fish, it stocks 10 times more carbon than forestry soils and protects beaches from erosion. It only grows a few millimetres per year and once destroyed it cannot be restored (according to current knowledge). What is Posidonia seagrass ?

POSIDONIA SEAGRASS & NEW FRENCH ANCHORING REGULATIONS

New regulations Local regulations have been implemented since 2016 for yachts above 80m to moor in suitable areas (decree 155-2016). Another decree (123-2019) bans anchoring into protected species, such as Posidonia seagrass.

It has been decided in different territorial decrees to ban yachts >20–24m from anchoring on Posidonia seagrass and other sensitive habitats. Regulation maps are available in harbour facilities and broking agencies, or online: www.premar-mediterranee.gouv.fr/arretes.html
