Best in Berkshire

National, which was last staged here in 2015. The team will be delivering more high-speed dashes, a blur of coloured silks and flying manes all condensed on pint-sized Shetland ponies. The Formula 1 of equine, the Scurry Driving Championships will be making a swift entrance to the main arena. Horse and carriages skilfully steer around multiple obstacles that make it fast, furious and exciting viewing. Elsewhere across the 150-acre showground, visitors can sample some of the delightful food and beverages available in the food tent, and watch craftsmen skilfully create another masterpiece. Local auctioneer and antiques expert Thomas Plant, a regular expert on shows such as Bargain Hunt, Flog It! and Antiques Road Trip , will be judging the best and unique items available. The Food and Farming zone will be celebrating British Farming with a number of fun and interesting hands-on activities for all the family. And the ever- popular Millers Ark Farm returns with its collection of adorable donkeys, chicks, goats, pigs and many more.

Royal County of Berkshire Show, Kirsten Loyd. “With 2,000 animals of all shapes and sizes, from prize pedigree bulls to llamas and chickens, I am sure there will be something to catch your eye. “There are hundreds of trade stands with a variety of wares for sale and the food and craft marquees are full with many different stalls to entice your taste buds. “As you walk around the showground, there is something for all the family; from children’s petting farm to the countryside area, the produce marquee and cookery theatre to the Food & Farming Zone and vintage area. I’m very much looking forward to experiencing as much as I can.” Top of the bill This year sees the return of the Devil’s Horsemen, a team of riders who perform breath- taking, high energy acrobatics on horseback. Tearing along at full gallop, the rider will be hanging at impossible angles from its back or standing from the saddle. The show is also welcoming back the Shetland Pony Grand

THE Royal County of Berkshire Show promises to offer a festival of farming, food and fun to some 60,000 visitors this weekend. The team are really excited with the variety of entertainment and attractions this year, with fun ‘have-a-go’ activities for all the family as well as spectacular shows and stunts and, of course the best livestock from around the UK on show. The organisers have introduced some new activities this year, and upgraded some of the old favourites. The vintage area is bigger and better than ever with more tractors, threshing machines and rick saws, and the Harvest tent has had a complete overhaul and is now called the Produce tent and will be displaying the complete food chain from the raw material right through to the finished product. There will be demonstrations and displays from bakers, apple juicers, oil pressers and local ale producers. The central core of the showground features 600 stands selling everything from fine arts to children’s toys and from country clothing to firepits. Around the edges, vast marquees

are devoted to food and crafts. Livestock owners appreciate the friendly end-of-season event for the show circuit and it regularly attracts entrants from right across Britain, with more than 2,000 animals competing. The show organisers are very honoured to be hosting the Burke Trophies this year, prestigious and historic trophies that are given to the best beef and dairy cattle. The show is also home to the National Show of the Red Ruby Devon Cattle Society; a show that travels around the country each year and they have chosen the Berkshire Show to carry out their competition this year. “The show this year promises to be a hugely entertaining weekend,” says president of the

Horsey Heaven

THE Royal County of Berkshire Show promises a feast of equestrian action to entertain the crowds. You will find everything from the Shetland Pony Grand National, which will entertain the family, to the Formula 1 of equine, the Scurry Driving Championships and the qualifying of the Olympia Horse Show 2017. The elegant side-saddle quadrille, heavy horse turnouts and showing classes (both ridden and in hand) will also be returning to the show. The show is excited that the Shetland Pony Grand National is returning to the main arena this year. A high-speed dash over miniature steeplechase fences, a blur of coloured silks, flying manes and tails, the roar of the crowd and the excitement of a day at the races all condensed into Shetland pony size. The British Showjumping International Stairway competition tops the showjumping bill again this year, offering an opportunity to see existing British team members and new talent competing for prize money. Spectators can experience the elegance of yesteryear as the Side Saddle Association Display Team takes to the main arena in period costume, demonstrating the graceful art of this style of riding. The team features riders from Hampshire, Berkshire and Wiltshire, many of whom compete regularly in top-class national and international events. Then there’s the excitement of the Scurry Driving Championships, the timeless

You can watch the many displays of rural activities that also invite you to ‘have-a-go’, and the cookery theatre will not only be providing demonstrations, but children will have the opportunity to have a hands-on experience. We have to thank the 400 volunteers who work tirelessly throughout the year and in particular over this weekend for the time they give to make this show such a success. Our chosen charity this year is the Mary Hare School, who will also have a stand at the show. It is a remarkable school and a cause very close to our hearts. Have a wonderful day. Kirsten Loyd and Judith Marcham

Thursday, 14 September, 2017 Cossack warriors galloping on the showground arena

THE Devils Horsemen are delighted to be returning to the Royal County of Berkshire show with their Cossack display of breath-taking, high energy acrobatics on horseback! With more than 40 years’ experience in horsemanship, their displays range from Cossacks to jousting and chariots to the Wild West. They also provide horses and equipment to the film and TV world, with credits such as the Lloyds Bank commercials featuring the famous Black Horse, Game of Thrones , Sky Sports Formula 1 Promotion , the blockbuster hit Wonder Woman and the latest Transformers movie, The Last Knight . The Devil’s Horsemen were established from the most effective battle tactics in military history, the Mongol Cavalry. They used sturdy, agile and durable horses to conquer lands from China to Hungary, and from northern India to Russia. These battle techniques have now been transformed into acrobatics on horseback, tearing

along at full gallop, while its rider hangs at impossible angles or standing on the saddle. The team base their skills on the Cossack riders, who were some of the bravest warriors in the 14th and 15th centuries, and all the trick riding that features in their shows was created to keep them safe on the battle field. The Devils Horsemen are

located at Wychwood Stud in Buckinghamshire; 200 acres of meadow land where the horses live as a herd in the summer. Commentator for the Devil’s Horsemen, Karina Essery says: “The Devils Horsemen has a long history with the Royal County of Berkshire Show and will be delighted to greet old friends and make new ones this year.”

Education is key to British agriculture

THE Newbury & District Agricultural Society’s Education Programme plays a huge part in their key aims in educating the next generation about Britain’s agricultural industry. Education officer Jan Murray is responsible for a calendar of events, such as visiting schools and showing the origins of food, how it is produced and how everyone can benefit from healthily grown produce. Jan also invites schools to the showground and runs a series of activities, as well as running demonstrations and competitions at other local venues. This year has seen a number of schools take part in British Sausage Week, where pupils get to blind-test various sausages as well as a watch a sausage- making demonstration and take part in fun activities. The popular Potato Challenge sees children from various schools visit the showground to take part in a number of potato activities, such as blind testing and demonstrations, as well as planting their own seeds before taking them back to school. They then return to the showground in June to find out which school has harvested the most potatoes. Each year pre-schools, primary, secondary, mainstream and special schools across Berkshire are invited to exhibit in the Education tent at the Royal County of Berkshire Show. Schools can book one or two
