What do I need to do in order to play at San Diego as a freshman?
your offi cial visit by the college you will be visiting; (2) on the day of a coach's o ff-campus contact with you by tl1at coach; (3) on the initial date for signing the National Letter of Intent in your sport th rough two days after the initial signing date; and (4) you (or yo ur parents) may telephone a coach at yo ur expense as o ften as you wish. A fter a National Letter o f Intent is signed, unlimited call s may be placed to the prospect. Off-Campus Contacts: A college coach may contact you in person o ff the coll ege campu s only on or after July 1 after the completion of your junior year in high school. The contact must take place on the prospect's high school campus and follow restrictions on the sport's recruiting calendar. A contact is any fa ce- to-face meeting between a college coach or athletics staff member and you or your parents, during which any of you say more than " hello." Also, any such face-to-face meeting that is prearranged or that takes place on your campus, at an o rganized competition o r p racti ce involving yo u or your high school, preparato ry school, two-year college or all-star team shall be considered a contact, regardless o f the conversation. H owever, a college coach may visit your high school (with the approval o f your high school principal) only once a week during contact period . Evaluations: An evaluation is any o ff-campus activity used to assess your academic qualifications or athletics ability, including a visit to your high school (during which no contact occurs) or watching you practice o r compete at any site. In football, a coach has three evaluation op– portunities and six contact opportunities. O nce yo u sign a National Letter o f Intent, you may be evaluated an unlimited number o f times by a college coach from th e college with which you have signed . Letters: Letters and printed recruiting in formation may be sent to you starting September 1 st at th e beginning o f yo ur junio r year in high school. However, you may still contact a university prio r to thi s date to receive general (non-athletic related) information. You may also complete an athletic questionnaire prior to thi s date. What Can I Receive from San Diego? Yo u (or yo ur famil y) may no t receive an y benefi t, ind ucement o r arrangement, such as cash, cl othing, camp, improper expenses, trans– portation, gifts or loan s to encourage yo u to sign a National Letter o f Intent o r attend an NCAA college.
If you intend to participate in Division I or II athletics as a freshman, you must register and be certified by the NCAA Initial-Eligibifay Clearinghouse. Yo ur high school counselors should provide you with a student-release form and a brochure titled, "NCAA G uide for the College-Bo und Student-Athlete." In o rder to be registered with the clearinghouse, you must complete the student-release form and mail the top (white) copy of th e fo rm to the clearinghouse along with th e $50 registration fee. G ive th e yellow and pink copies o f the form to a high-school o fficial, who then sends the yellow copy, along with an o fficial copy o f your high-school transcript th at includes your SAT o r ACT score(s), to the clearingho use. Yo ur high school sho uld keep the pink copy for its fil es. You may also register online at WW\Y.nrn,1 i;lcarinµ-housc.nct . After graduation and before th e school closes fo r the summer, your school also must send the clearinghouse a copy o f yo ur fi nal transcript that confirms graduation from high school. Yo ur counselors can obtain registration materials, at no cost, by calling the clearinghouse at (319) 337-1492 or (877) 262-1492. How do I know if I'm being recruited? You become a "prospective student-athl ete" when you start ninth– } 8 grade cl asses. Before th e ninth grade, you become a prospective student-athlete if a college gives you (or yo ur relatives or friends) --- any fin ancial aid or other benefi ts that the college does not provide prospective students generally. You become a " recruited prospective student-athl ete" at a par ticular college if any coach approaches yo u (or any member o f your famil y) about enrolling and participati ng in athletics at th at college. Activities by coaches that cause you to become a recruited prospective student-athlete are (1) providing yo u with an official visit; (2) placing more than one telephone call to you or any other member of your family; or (3) visiting you or an y other member o f your famil y anywhere o ther than the college campus. Boosters: In addition to general recruiting regulations, no alumni, boos ters or representatives of a college's athletics interests can be involved in your recruitment. There can be no phone calls or letters from boosters. If a USD booster is contacting you, pl ease call the San Diego Compliance O ffi ce as soon as possible at (619) 260-7577. When can I talk to the coach and have him/her see me play?
Telephone Calls: In Football, a prospect may receive one phone call in May o f the prospects junior year in high school and may start receiving additional calls after September 1 o f your senior year. A f– ter this, a college coach is limited to one telephone call per week to you (or yo ur parents or legal guardians) , except th at unlimited call s to you (or your parents o r legal guardians) may be made under the fo llowing circumstances: (1) during the fi ve days immedi ately before
