Fiber for the Philippines

Subsea upgrade

In amove to drive Internet and broadband development in Africa, communications service provider Seacom has selected Ciena Corporation’s 6500 Packet-Optical platform and OneControl unified management system for the upgrade of a submarine network. The upgrade will benefit key countries in Seacom’s 17,000km undersea network, including India, Egypt, Dijbouti, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, and South Africa. The deployment will initially use Ciena’s 40G coherent transport technology, with ultra-long distance 100G wavelengths planned for future upgrades.

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co (PLDT) is to install over 5,000km of new fiber optic cable facilities during 2013. PLDT said that the investment would extend the total reach of its fiber network to almost 60,000km. The fiber expansion program will cover the domestic fiber optic network (DFON) used for long haul applications, fiber-to-the home (FTTH), fiber-in the-loop (FITL) and other inter-office fibering projects. The FTTH project will make PLDT’s high-speed Internet services available to about two million homes in Metro Manila, the regions of Central Luzon, Southern Tagalog, and the provinces of Panay, Negros Occidental, Cebu and Davao. The additional fiber optical cable (FOC) links include submarine cables that will boost the data connectivity of the islands of Palawan, Bohol and Panay. Starting in 2013, PLDT will upgrade the capacity of its different cable systems initially up to 40 and then to 100 gigabytes per second.
