and the New River Valley. A “career pathway” is coherent sequence of rigorous academic and career/technical courses that begin in the 9 th grade and can lead to an associate, baccalaureate or further degree, an industry-recognized certificate, and/or licensure.

To help students investigate careers and design their courses of study to advance their career goals, the Virginia Department of Education’s Office of Career and Technical Education has adopted the nationally accepted structure of 16 career clusters, their accompanying career pathways, and their sample career specialties or occupations.
