➣➢➣ The advantage of digital signal processing is the easy installation of the connecting cables (maximum 1,000m), the indepen- dence to electronic noise and the direct connection to computers in order to control or store data in the production process. Up to 32 tension sensors can be connected to a single PC to display, store and analyse tension readings continuously. For installations in rotating positions, the sensor can be equipped with a position sensor, which will compensate for the gravity forces. Previously, a fault could only be pinpointed offline after a malfunction had occurred. The measurement needed would then be complex and time-consuming, and often additional investigation was needed before the fault could be localised. However, the experts at Highvolt have developed a new measuring device called HiRES Locator, which makes fault location quick and easy. This is good news not only for grid operators and energy providers, who are required to monitor cabling systems of ever greater complexity, but also for cable manufacturers, who can integrate the HiRES Locator into their testing procedures for the purposes of quality assurance. the cable during active operation and localises a breakdown immediately while it is occurring, so the fault is localised with the system still online, not after the fact. The measurement is based on the impulse reflection method, also known as TDR (time-domain reflectometry). Previously, measurement technicians using this method would generate an artificial breakdown signal – an electrical impulse which would propagate through the conductor in wave form. If the wave encounters a material fault, it is reflected back. The location of the breakdown is then calculated from the time difference between the sent and received signal. The HiRES Locator can now determine this live and in real time.
