Ann Benton of the Daughters of the American Revolution Marais des Cygnes Chapter talks about how the organization was founded and how the group works to preserve history and promote education and the ide- als of patriotism. The local chapter has 45 members and gave away a $500 scholarship to a local student for the first time last year. Benton was the guest speaker at the Sep. 3 Paola Rotary Club meeting.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE: Chad Myers, chair

NITEROI, Brazil - A Paola girl visiting Brazil as an exchange student is recovering from a back injury she suffered recently while rock climbing. Amanda McVey is wearing a brace but still has not returned to classes following a Feb. 15 fall in which she frac- tured a bone in her lower back. McVey, a member of the Paola High School class of 2000, went to Niter- oi, Brazil, in Augustas a participant in the Rotary Youth Exchange program. McVey was climbing rocks near a waterfall with members of her host family when she slipped and fell between 20 and 30 feet, falling through the waterfall and into a pool below.
