“Save Africa with Africa!” —St. Daniel Comboni

Children around the world struggle to get an education. Young girls in Uganda are prevented from going to school because of family duties. Children are forced to fend for themselves on the street, battle addictions, and care for children even younger than themselves with little access to a better life. The Comboni Missionaries have a long history of equipping communities with education that has the power to sustain families throughout their lifetime. The gift of education gives children and teens hope for the future.

Sister Agnes Mileya is the administrator for a clinic that provides urgent care to the people of Lodonga, Uganda. A frequent cause of visits is malaria. She can provide care to the mothers and children who come to her for help, but she worries. “Malaria can be very dehydrating, so we advise mothers to make sure their children drink plenty of water. But the water we have at the clinic is unfiltered and untreated. What if they get something from the water that makes them even more ill than they were before?” For situations like this, a larger water filtration system can provide safe water for the patients at Sister Agnes’s clinic. This means better medicine, better treatment, and a better outcome for everyone.

Help Comboni shepherd Christians this season. Around the world, our Missionaries stay with their people throughout immense suffering, turmoil, and hardship. The continued training, education, and support of these missionaries are essential to sustaining our mission of serving the poor. Staffing each diocese can be a challenge, as there are many communities in need of a missionary shepherd. With the gift of pastoral ministry funding, religious and lay missionaries will be educated, staffed, and supported in communities around the world. Three missionaries in the South

Sudan serve a parish of 80 different villages. These priests minister to around 25,000 people. They travel on foot between villages through vast stretches of land covered in water during the rainy season. The need for pastoral care is dire in many communities. In some parts of the world, the local government can’t—or won’t—provide basic services to the people. If a community needs water, the missionaries arrange for a bore hole or well to be dug. If there is no school, they find a way to organize one. If there is no church building, a big tree will do. Your support means that our missionaries in the field have the support they need to continue to do the impossible, and to inspire future generations to carry on the mission.

MAKE ROOM AT THE INN THIS SEASON Often migrants are met with an attitude of exclusion upon their arrival. Comboni missionaries help parishes and schools to understand the difficult journey already made by migrant people and to see them as real people, not just a number. Palermo, Italy, has become one of several Mediterranean landing ports where migrants from Africa and other countries land. People who decide to leave their home and make the treacherous journey across the Mediterranean Sea, do so out of desperation. They are often escaping unspeakable violence and hardship. Our missionaries are there to listen and help. Gift $500 to support refugee resettlement Gift $225 to help migrant women find work and security SHELTER THE HOMELESS $225

The Moyo Babies Home is a life-saving refuge. When little Moses was an infant, his mother died. A grave was dug and her body put into it.Then her baby was carried forward, very much alive, and lowered into that same grave. He had no mother, no father, no family—and this was all the villagers knew to do. It is an uncommon practice, but not unknown.

Then something extraordinary happened. At the graveside,

a woman broke through the crowd, climbed into the grave, and whisked the child away. She knew about a place that would welcome and care for him; she knew about the Moyo Babies Home. After his stay at Moyo, three-year-old Moses was welcomed into a new family. This near-tragedy is now a wonderful story of success, one of many of the miracles of Moyo.

SHARE YOUR PLENTY Family celebrations are often marked by food—delicious and plentiful. For our brothers and sisters in mission territory, food may be the one thing they cannot rely on. Conflict, drought, and displacement can destroy crops or drive people far away from their lands, leaving them without a food supply. Areas with poor health care often have infants who have no mothers to nurse them or people who need specialized diets and cannot get them. The Comboni

Missionaries support feeding programs for orphans, schoolchildren, and those displaced by war or insecurity. Even a small contribution can mean life-saving sustenance for a refugee or a motherless child.

HAVE A HEALTHY HOLIDAY!

The Comboni Missionaries have established and staffed hospitals and clinics around the world. We also support existing health care facilities in regions where they are desperately needed. This support keeps the price of care very low, but some patients still cannot afford a hospital visit. They may delay seeking care until their condition causes irreparable damage. They might resort to paying swindlers for “healing potions.”Women may lose their babies because they fear they cannot afford to deliver in a hospital; babies may lose their mothers. Your contribution means a safe start for new lives and support for working men and women to stay healthy enough to care for their families and communities.

Even more than equipment and medicine, hospitals need doctors. The World Health Organization recommends a doctor/patient ratio of 1 to 1,000; in Uganda, each doctor would have to care for nearly 25,000 patients for everyone to have medical care. In some regions, it is even worse: The West Nile region has a population of 2.6 million people, with just 25 doctors. And Dr. Tom Catena is the only physician at Comboni-founded Mother of Mercy Hospital in the Nuba Mountains in the Sudan. He has one million patients. Plenty of young people are interested in becoming doctors, but medical programs are expensive. The Comboni Missionaries help solve the shortage of qualified medical professionals with scholarships for students and nursing programs in some of the world’s neediest places. Tuition at Makerere University School of Medicine can be an incredible bargain at less than $1,000 per year, but that is still well beyond what most students can cover. St. Mary’s Midwifery Training School in Gulu has produced almost 1,200 nurse midwives to serve the people of Uganda. Each year it has more than 300 applicants for its 60 seats, and many of those lucky admitted students need help with their tuition. The average daily income in Uganda is $2; the 30-month course leading to a certificate in midwifery costs $2,300.
