Cruise Collection 2019 Brochure

Northwest Passage: In the Footsteps of Franklin ABOARD THE OCEAN ADVENTURER For centuries, fortune-seekers risked their lives to find the Northwest Passage, the fabled sea route running between Europe and Asia. On this active adventure, cruise through the heart of the Northwest Passage and experience firsthand the islands, waterways, and wilds that still yield a gratifying sense of achievement for all who make the voyage. One of the highlights is Beechey Island, made famous by explorers such as Roald Amundsen and Sir John Franklin, who disappeared on his last expedition here in 1845. Searchers from Parks Canada found the wreck of one of his ships, the Erebus , in 2014; the Terror was found two years later.

Explore the West Greenland coast, including Maniitsoq, surrounded by soaring, snow-capped mountains, and Nuuk, the capital, a haven for history and culture lovers. Traverse the Davis Strait en route to the Canadian Arctic. DAYS 6-17 CANADA’S HIGH ARCTIC Zodiac, kayaking, and hiking excursions allow you to encounter the unique wildlife that calls this mysterious realm of dramatic fjords, glaciers, and mountains home. The icy waters host narwhals, beluga and right whales, ring and harp seals, and the skies are filled with countless birds. You’ll go ashore for hikes at such places as Cape Mercy and Dundas Harbour, and Zodiacs bring you close to the face of an actively calving glacier.

windswept Beechey Island, you’ll visit the small marked graves of three crew members who died during Sir John Franklin’s tragic expedition. Cruising past coastal islands, you have a chance of spotting beluga whales and narwhals as they feed on the large numbers of Arctic char, and at Baffin Island, see bowhead whales at Isabella Bay. The communities visited on the voyage include the traditional Inuit village of Pond Inlet and Fort Ross, where the Hudson’s Bay Company established a now-abandoned trading post in 1937. Disembark in Resolute on Day 16, fly to Ottawa, and depart on Day 17.

Some of the best ancient Thule remains in the Arctic are at Radstock Bay, a polar bear observation site. As icebergs travel down the Davis Strait, they’re naturally trapped at Qikiqtarjuaq, the iceberg capital of the world. A hike up to the hilltop inukshuk (a stone figure made by the Inuit) rewards you with spectacular views of the community. At
