From medieval Bergamo, nestled in the Italian Alps, we head out on a four-country odyssey of superb day hikes—crossing all the international borders on foot. Our unique route (a WT original) traces a path through the terraced vineyards of Lombardia’s Valtellina region, into Switzerland’s sunny Engadine Valley, across Liechtenstein, with its turreted castles, and into the grand Alps of Austria past prehistoric sites on the Eschnerberg Trail. Along the way we’ll see Romanesque architecture, ancient spa towns, and fascinating archaeological sites, enjoying farm-to-table meals, seasonal delicacies, and wines en route, including a special wine tasting at the renowned cellars of the Prince of Liechtenstein. Days 1-3 Bergamo, Italy / Bormio A walking tour unlocks the medieval world of Bergamo, and we hike trails in the green Valtellina Valley, see the World Heritage-listed rock art at Capo di Ponte, and enjoy lunch in a family-run agriturismo for a chance to sample wine, cheese, and other regional specialties. The central piazza dates from the Iron Age, and our hotel, perched over the Valtellina Valley, has natural hot springs and a spa.
