From Trieste to Venice OFF THE BEATEN PATH IN NORTHEASTERN ITALY

The dreamy Adriatic port of Trieste, vine-clad hills of the Collio region, mountain grandeur of the Friuli Dolomites, and hidden corners of Venice are our enchanting destinations in this delightfully untraveled province of northeastern Italy. Coastal trails lead us along the Bay of Trieste, and in the Collio, we hike right from our castle-hotel into high vineyards. We’ll explore Roman Aquileia, with its exquisite mosaics, and hop over to Kobarid, Slovenia, to hike mountain trails past lacy waterfalls and World War I bunkers. Back in Italy, our top-of-the-world hikes among the spires of the Friuli Dolomites bring us to crystalline lakes, mountain refuges, and a 16th century pilgrimage site. Journey’s end finds us in a palazzo-hotel in Venice, with a private evening cruise through hidden canals. Days 1-2 Trieste / Gemina Trail Trieste is magnificent, with an extraordinary heritage as the Hapsburg Empire’s port on the Adriatic. We’ll hike along the Napoleon Way and village to village on the Gemina Trail, with lunch at an osmiza , a local farm.

Aquileia, hike in the Collio’s wine country, and discover the star-shaped city of Palmanova. Overnights are in a restored 13th century castle set in a vineyard (Casanova stayed here!). Days 5-6 Cividale / Kobarid, Slovenia / Fusine Lakes From exquisite Cividale del Friuli, once the capital of a Lombard duchy, we slip across the Slovenian border to Kobarid for a mountain hike that brings insights into World War I history on the Isonzo Front (immortalized by Hemingway in A Farewell to Arms ), with a phenomenal dinner at Kobarid’s acclaimed Hiša Franko restaurant. Back in Italy, we hike from the glacial lakes of Fusine up to Rifugio Zacchi for mountain panoramas. Days 7-8 The Friuli Dolomites / Montasio Plateau / Monte Santo di Lussari We hike below the ramparts of Jôf di Montasio and stop in at the charming village of Malborghetto, with its 17th century Palazzo Veneziano. Another hike brings us up Monte Santo di Lussari, a 16th century pilgrimage site with sweeping views into Slovenia, Italy, and Austria. Days 9-10 Venice / Palazzo Giovanelli From our fabulous hotel, with its own private deck on the Grand Canal, we’ll walk to the exquisite Ca’ Rezzonico, a palazzo that allows us to step into the world of 18th century Venice, with an evening cruise by private boat through charming back canals. Depart on Day 10.
