THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO
The University The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just 1Ominutes from downtown San Diego.
Academics USO enrolls more than 6,200 students who have a choice of more than 50 undergraduate and gradu– ate degree programs. The University includes the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law and Nurs– ing. Class size generally averages between 10-30 students with the student to teacher ratio being 18:1. Over 96 percent of USD's full-time faculty hold doc– torates. The Campus The USD campus is one of the most architec– turally unique institutions found in the country, fea– turing 18 major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renaissance style. In the last decade USO has completed eight major construction and expansion projects. In 1990, the renovated Katherine M. and George M. Pardee Jr. Legal Research Center opened, a facility double the size of the former law library that offers the latest in information technology. Student activities include cultural events, dances, boat cruises, beach parties, BBQ's, concerts, comedy nights, symposia and much more. Students participate in a wide range of volunteer projects such as adult lit– eracy tutoring, senior citizen outreach, and house building in Tijuana. Over two-thirds of the USO community partakes in intramural sports. Student Life

1994 USD PREVIEW Sue Snyder could teach those politicians a little something about executing four– year plans. In her fourth year last season , the Toreros accomplished many "firsts" for the Torero program at the Division I level. A 20-plus win season , the San Diego
City Championship, a USO Invitational title, series sweeps of Pepperdine and San Diego State and an NCAA Tournament berth. No Element of Suprise With such success last season, it will be difficult for the Toreros to sneak-up on the competition this year. The Toreros expect to utilize four seniors in their starting six. WCC schools have witnessed the exploits of All– Region Jennifer Wrightson (Culver City, CA) the last two seasons. And those active in volleyball circles no doubt recognize Amy Boyer (Poway, CA), a transfer setter from UCLA who set a USO single-season assist record last year.
Sister Act: (/-r) - Liz and Sara Gunsaulus; Amy and Jennifer McMahon. It Gets Better Outside hitter Jennifer Lofftus (Arcadia, CA) spends as much time getting to balls (323 digs in 1993) as she does putting them away (254 last year). With the graduation of Nikki Wallace, middle blocker Amy McMahon (King City, CA) steps into the limelight as USD's most effective blocker. Amy leads all active players nationally in double-digit block matches (12). Sister Act This season should mark the coming out year for Long Beach native Liz Gunsaulus, a product of the successful Magnum Club program. When her game is on , Gunsaulus has proven to be one of the team's most dominating hitters. The addition of her freshman sister, Sara Gunsaulus (Long Beach , CA) guarantees USO of having at least one sibling set in the starting rotation. Sophomore Jennifer McMahon (King City, CA) is the incumbent middle blocker and should see plenty of action beside her sister at the net this season. Sophomore Luann Petix (Los Alamitos, CA) could make a strong bid for the setter's job. Also lending help at the setter's position and in the backrow will be sophomore Kym Phillips (Phoenix, AZ), who appeared in 27 matches last season. New Faces New additions to this year's team include outside hitters Maria Bowden (Los Alamitos, CA) a high school teammate of Petix's, and LaManda Mounts (Bakers– field , CA) a First Team AII-CI F selection . Both are exceptional athletes, strong players who the coach ing staff expect to push fo r playing time and contribute right away.
1993 YEAR-IN-REVIEW
USD Volleyball Program Comes of Age... Toreros qualify for NCAA Tournament
The 1993 season became a year filled with firsts ...season sweeps of San Diego State and Pepperdine , championship titles at the USO Invitational and San Diego City Championships, a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Nikki Wallace didn't know the school's win– loss record when she decided on USO five years ago but she was enthusiastic about the new coach, Sue Snyder.Under Snyder, Wallace would go on to: • Establish six wee blocking records • Become nation's leading active blocker • Become first USO player to record 1,000 kills.
Working for the first time with a team she en– tirely built, Sue led San Diego to a 16-1 start, including nine straight victo– ries to open the season . A

Amy McMahon (/) and Jennifer Wrightson (r) approach the net against San Diego State.
healthy Jennifer Wrightson registered 422 kills, by far a single-season best at USO. Newcomer Amy Boyer (transplanted from UCLA) set the ball in all the right places, recording a school-record 1,321 assists. USO was just as exciting a team to watch defensively, averaging just over three blocks a game to finish 11th nationally. The "Brick Wall " tandem of Wallace and Amy McMahon stuffed opponents all season . Not surprisingly, USO fin– ished atop most of the wee blocking charts. A dramatic five-set victory over Loyola Marymount in the Sports Center may have been a turning point in the season. The Lions, one of four regionally-ranked teams USO would beat, were a sure-bet for the NCAAs. San Diego proved it could play with the better teams and reinforced that fact when they pushed Santa Clara to the limit two weeks later. The end result was an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament when the Toreros took a game from Washington State in a first round loss.

SUE SNYDER, HEAD COACH
Fifth Season • 1994 wee Coach of the Year The USO Volleyball program returned to national prominence last year, due much in part to Head Coach Sue Snyder, now in her fifth season at USO. Working for the first time with a team she entirely recruited , Snyder guided the Toreros to a 24-6 record and the school's first NCAA Division I Tournament berth. For her efforts, Snyder was named West Coast Conference Coach of the Year by her peers. In Snyder's four seasons at
Alcala Park, the Toreros have never fallen from the WCC's upper division. Snyder's track record when it comes to recruiting is well documented. Her recruits own six individual and five team WCC records. In addition , she has produced two All-West Region players, three AII-WCC selections and back-to-back WCC Freshman of the Year recipients. This year's squad alone has three Volleyball MonthlyFab 50 picks. Snyder, formerly Sue Hegerle, was hired by USO Athletic Director Tom Iannacone on January 31 , 1990. She previously served four seasons as an assistant coach at San Diego State (1986-89) , the same school at which she earned a Physical Eduaction degree (1984) and masters in Educa– tion Administration . Considered one of the most popular Aztec players of all-time , Snyder ex– celled in big matches , twice be– ing named to the NCAA West Regional All-Tournament Team and earning AII-WCAA honors in 1982. She finished sixth on the school's all-time kills list and became the first team captain, under Rudy Suwara, to be elected by a unanimous vote by her teammates. Snyder, who's averaged 18 wins a season at USO, began her coaching career as an assistant at New Mexico (1984-85) . She also assisted the West squad at the 1989 U.S. Olympic Festival. Snyder had prior exposure to international volleyball as a member of the U.S. National Team (1985-86) , coached by Terry Liskevych, and earned the USA Players' Award, symbolic of the spirit and loyalty she showed to the team. Snyder's playing career at the amateur level includes six USVBA All– American citations and three national team championships. A native of Escondido, CA, Sue and husband Ky, USD's Director of Athletic Development, are the parents of a young son, Riley. The Snyders reside in Scripps Ranch.
DIANE CAMPBELL, ASSISTANT COACH
Fourth Season Brigham Young University (1987)
Diane Campbell begins her fourth season on the bench, the longest tenure of any USO assistant coach. A Brigham Young University alumnus (Recreation, 1987), Campbell earned All– High Country Athletic Conference and all-region honors as a Cougar. With her college days complete, Campbell played overseas professionally in France (1989-90) before a stint as head coach at Eastern Montana University (1990). This past winter she twice earned Game MVP honors in helping the San Diego Spikers to the inaugural championship of the National Volleyball Association (NVA). A year earlier Campbell led the forerunner San Diego Waves to the Western Womens' Volleyball League Championship. She and husband David Brunette live in Rancho Penasquitos.
