A Message From President Hughes The men's basketball program is integral to the University's athletic endeavors, just as the athletic program is integral to our view of education - which is that education should develop the whole person. This program moved from NCAA Division II to Division I in 1979, and each year has seen increasing strength and competitive cap– abilities in the USO team. The University is proud of the team's accomplishments, and pleased to support the program in every way possible, including scholarship aid to our athletes, recognition of the values of the program, and promotion of intercollegiate athletics. I believe our USO team will be receiving some national attention this year, and I look forward to watching the season's events unfold.

TOM IANNACONE Tom Iannacone begins his second year as the University of San Diego director of athletics. He assumed the position September 1, 1988 after a nationwide search for a successor to Rev. Patrick Cahill. The 48-year-old Iannacone has made great strides in his first year. His accomplishments at USO in– clude an ongoing internal reorganization of the athletic depart– ment, plus improvements in the major areas of new personnel, additional scholarship assistance and facilities improvements. Iannacone came to the University of San Diego with an im– pressive list of credentials and a thorough knowledge of inter– collegiate athletics. Prior to USO he was Director of Athletics for four years at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania. Hard work, loyalty and dedication are just some of the words that easily describe Iannacone. His major contributions at St. Francis included the expansion of sports offerings and scholar–

ships for both men and women, improved budgets, renovation of athletic facilities, the hiring of additional staff, and the establishment of a master plan for the future and continual development of athletics. He served on several ECAC Metro Conference committees, most notably the committee on conference development, which developed a plan for the future and implemented the position for a full-time commissioner. Prior to his tenure at St. Francis, Iannacone served as assistant athletic director at Fordham University from 1977-84. Along with his administrative duties at Fordham , he was an assistant football coach for the Rams. From 1975-78, he acted as offensive coordinator and backfield coach as Fordham captured 19 victories in their final 24 games during this span . The 1977 squad was and remains the highest scoring team in Fordham history, averaging 34 points per game. In 1983 Iannacone was presented the prestigious Jack Coffey Award by the Alumni Association for outstanding contributions to Fordham athletics. He has also served on various Metro Atlantic Conference committees. Prior to Fordham, Iannacone taught physical education and coached track and football in the

Ridgefield, Norwalk and New Milford (CT) school districts from 1964-76. He made his collegiate football coaching debut as an offensive back– field coach at Western Con– necticut State University in 1974. A 1964 graduate of the Un i– versity of Connecticut, Ian– nacone received his master of science degree in physical education from Southern Con– necticut State University in 1973. Tom and his wife, Cyn– thia, have three children: Tom Jr., Jennifer and Eric.

COACH HANK EGAN

SAN DIEGO HEAD COACH HANK EGAN

Head Coach Hank Egan begins his sixth season at the helm of the USO basket– ball program. He has tallied an impressive five-year record at San Diego of 78-63, and a 51-19 mark in the USD Sports Center. With 18 seasons as a Division I head coach behind him, Hank will enter the 1989-90 season with an overall record of 226-248. Coach Egan found the 1988-89 season a challenging one as his thirteen-man roster, which included five freshmen and five sophomores, finished the season with an overall record of 8-20 and 2-12 mark in the West Coast Conference (tied for 7th with Portland). His young squad opened some eyes early in the season when they got off to a 3-0 start. The team took home the championship trophy from the New Mexico Tipoff Tournament in Albuquerque after the young Toreros stunned host New Mexico 64-53 in the infamous 'Pit.' In 1986-87 Coach Egan guided the Toreros to the first round of the NCAA Tourna– ment. With a tough 62-61 loss to Auburn University in the tournament's first round, the USO men's basketball team completed its most successful season ever with a 24-6 record. Along the way USO won fourteen consecutive games and won the regular season West Coast Conference championship with a 13-1 record . His peers from the wee voted him the 1986-87 Coach of the Year. In 1985-86 he guided the Toreros to a fine record of 19-9 and was named Co-Coach of the Year in the WCC, sharing the honor with UCLA's Jim Harrick (formerly of Pepperdine University).

A recognized expert in the technical aspects of the game, Hank has an impeccable reputation for integrity, and is a coach who "gets the most" out of his players. Acknowledged as one of the finest defensive coaches in the nation , good defense is a trademark with Egan-coached teams. His 1986-87 team finished #1 in the nation in field goal percentage defense (40.1%) and in the top-ten in scoring defense (60.3). His 1985-86 team finished 8th in the nation in FGO/o defense, limiting opponents to 42.4% shooting. Prior to USO, Hank coached at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs for eighteen years, thirteen as the head coach. Highlights of his coaching career include his 1986-87 club that finished 24-6 and par– ticipated in the NCAA Tournament, his 1985-86 team that finished 19-9, and his 16-9 Air Force club from 1976. As evidence of the high regard in which he is held by his colleagues and basketball people in general, Hank was the alternate coach to George Raveling (USC) for the 1984 United States Olympic Basketball team; he was a coach in the Olympic tryouts

in Bloomington, Indiana, and also scouted South American Olympic teams in San Paulo, Brazil ; he is a member of the Legislative Commission of the National Basketball Coaches Association of America; and, was one of only ten coaches chosen in 1984 by the NCAA to participate and represent the country's coaches in a special meeting of Presidents, Athletic Directors, and Faculty Representatives called to study the strengthening of academic requirements for intercollegiate athletics. Before becoming the second head coach in Air Force basketball history, Egan was the freshman mentor for two seasons and was chief scout and recruiter during the 1970-71 season . From 1966 to 1968, he was an assistant junior varsity coach . A three-time basketball letterman at Navy, he also played several seasons on Air Force service teams and has coached on both the military and AAU levels. Hank graduated from the Naval Academy in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. His hobbies include golf, racquetball , reading and crossword puzzles. Hank and his wife Judy have two children , John and Kelly.

RANDY BENNETT Randy Bennett begins his second year at the University of San Diego as a full-time assistant to coach Hank Egan. With the recent departure of assistant Mike Legarza, Randy will be given additional responsibilities in the areas of recruiting, scouting and on-court coaching. Prior to his 1988 appointment at the University of San Diego, Randy coached two seasons (1986-88) with the University of Idaho as a part-time assistant. Their 1987-88 team finished 19-11 and second in the Big Sky Conference. Before his stint with Idaho, he was a volunteer assistant at USD (1985-86) while finishing his undergraduate degree at the University of Califor– nia, San Diego. The past three summers he has directed Hank Egan's boys basketball camps.

A 1986 graduate of UC San Diego, Randy received his B.S. degree in Animal Physiology. He played two years of basketball at UC San Diego (1983-85) and two years at Mesa Community College (1980-82) in Mesa, AZ under his dad, Tom Bennett. In his two years at Mesa, the team went 56-10 and made it to the nationals his freshman year. Randy, currently working on his M.A. in teaching, is single and resides in San Diego.

GUS MAGEE Gus enters his 20th season as a member of the University of San Diego coaching staff. He began his coaching career in 1970 as a graduate assistant to Bernie Bickerstaff while pursu– ing his Master's Degree in Social Science. He joined former USD coach Jim Brovelli in 1973.

Gus also completed his undergraduate degree at the Univer– sity of San Diego and was a top basketball player here after completing his tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force. Gus played here from 1966-70, his first three years under legendary coach Phil Wool pert, and his final campaign with Bernie Bickerstaff. With him at center the Toreros had a 53-48 record. He was twice selected the team's most valuable player, in 1968-69 and again in 1969-70. He still holds most of the USD rebounding records including career boards (948), most in a single game (24) , and the single season rebounding average (14.4). Gus was the first USD alumnus to be inducted into the USD Basketball Hall of Fame. He takes great pride in being involved with USD basketball since 1966 and in helping it to grow from a small college program to its current status as a member of the NCAA Division One ranks and the West Coast Conference. He is currently an Administrative Analyst with the San Diego Public Library System. Gus and his wife Faye have one son, Mark.

1989-1990 UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO OUTLOOK

Peruse the University of San Diego men's basketball roster, and you might notice the prevalence of two things: AZ 's and hyphens. This, plus a repu– table corps of returning lettermen, is why the Toreros will be good this season . It's been a long two years for Coach Hank Egan and his staff since the Scott Thompson-led Toreros finished 24-6, won the conference and were invited to the NCAA Tournament. In 1987-88, they finished 11-17. Last season , 8-20. " Last year was probably the tough– est I've ever had coaching ," admits Egan , in his sixth season at USO. "We were so close in so many games, but we couldn't ever get over the hump. In all my years of coaching, I don't know if I've ever had so much newness." A brief historical lesson: The '86-87 team was top-heavy with seniors (in– cluding four of five starters). A sub– sequent NCAA rule change regarding academic requirements for community college transfers made it difficult for Egan to fill the void with anything but true freshmen. And youth did not equal victories. But all that is about to change. Egan has experience, AZ's and hyphens. AZ, of course, is the abbreviation for Ari– zona. Five of the team's nine new faces this season hail from the state, and four played at Mesa Community College (in suburban Phoenix) sometime during their career. The hyphens appear next to multi– ple-position players, as in G-F (guard– forward) or F-C (forward-center) . More than ever, Egan's players are athletic and versatile. More than one player can handle the ball, more than one can shoot, more than one can rebound , more than one can play defense. Most can do all of the above. "We have more players who can do a lot of things," Egan says. "I intend to set up a system based not on their position but on their personal capa– bilities." And that will mean running and pressing. Running and pressing? The Toreros? Yes. The '86-87 team, led by the

Even subtle changes in a team's philosophy take time to implement and develop, and Egan has had nothing but new faces the past two years. Last season, in fact, ten of the Toreros were either freshmen or sophomores. But those freshmen and sopho– mores are sophomores and juniors now. In addition , two of the transfers, 6-8 senior John Jerome and 6-4 junior Anthony Thomas, sat out last season and practiced with the team. So to them only the uniforms will be new, not Egan's system. Just three lettermen were lost. Guards Danny Means and Efrem Leonard ran out of eligibility, and junior guard Kelvin Means, Danny's younger brother, transferred to Fresno State to play Division I football. Eight lettermen are back-including three starters from a year ago-senior forward Craig Cottrell , junior center Dondi Bell and sophomore guard Gylan Dottin, the conference's co– freshman of the year. And there are other solid returnees that started at some point last season : Wayman Strickland , Keith Colvin , Kelvin Woods and Randy Thompson. To this, add the Mesa connection : Jerome, Thomas, guard Pat Holbert and forward-center Shawn Hamilton . Holbert and Hamilton , both juniors, were teammates at Mesa last season. Thomas broke the single-season scor– ing record there the year before, and Jerome was a JC All-American there before transferring to Arizona State in 1987. The Mesa connection is no coin– cidence. The academics meet the NCAA's new transfer requirements, Egan admires Coach Tom Bennett's program, and USO has successfully recruited other Mesa players. "When you come right down to it," Egan says, "the single best sell at a school is the players themselves. If the kids like it, they'll sell it. Pete Murphy (1984-86) and Mark Manor (1985-87) both went to Mesa, then came here and had good experiences." In addition , Egan has a freshman class that he rates "equally good " as

7-foot Thompson, was based on size and power. It played position defense that rarely extended beyond midcourt. It employed a walk-it-up, almost plod– ding halfcourt offense that pounded the ball inside. "Since we could rely on that, we never had to worry about run– ning," Egan says. The increased athleticism and versa– tility afford Egan the luxury of extend– ing the defense. Extending the defense, in turn , induces the running game. The Toreros won't run and press with the reckless abandon of conference-mate Loyola Marymount, but at times the heads of fans will swivel like at a tennis match.

PAGE9 tributing immediately. And Temple, Egan says, "is as good an athlete as I've ever had,"and is expected to con– tribute at small forward . WEST COAST CONFERENCE The Toreros play a nonconference schedule that includes road games against San Diego State, St. John's (at St. John's Tournament) and UCLA. But Egan says what the team is really look– ing toward are the conference games and ensuing tournament at Loyola Marymount. That's how competitive the West Coast Conference has become. It is now known simply as the wee (the "Athletic" from West Coast Athletic Conference has been dropped) and as one of the nation's better collection of basketball programs. Four teams last season won 20 games and only two had losing records overall. Not so co– incidentally, four teams were invited to postseason tournaments-LMU and St. Mary's to the NCAA, Pepperdine and Santa Clara to the NIT. The Toreros finished a dismal, but deceiving, 2-12 in conference play. The first six losses were all by six points or less. In the first round of the conference tournament, they lost to second– seeded Pepperdine, 72-69. "Hopefully," Egan says, "with matur– ity we'll win our share of those close games this season ." And probably a few more. By Mark Zeigler of The San Diego Union

QUTLOOK its predecessor, but one that won't be forced to produce so much so quickly. It is also a class with local ties: 6-8 Brooks Barnhard played at Escondido High, 6-4 Joe Temple played at Lincoln Prep, and 6-3 Neal Meyer lived in San Diego before moving to how'd you guess? Arizona. "I like our kids," Egan says. " I think there's a chance for us to be a much improved ball club. I really feel we're better at every position than last year."

Lochtefeld, a walk-on from Westmont High in Campbell , CA. Geoff Probst, a 5-11 sophomore guard, will sit out this season after transferring from UC Davis. FRONTCOURT The frontline can only get better. Everyone returns from last season and , as if that wasn't enough, there is in– coming talent. The 6-5 Cottrell, a senior co-captain with Jerome, spent most of the summer in the weight room and, Egan says, " You'll be amazed at the difference it made." Craig was USD's leading scorer at 12.2 ppg and led the wee in field goal percentage at .647. Bell, the team's biggest player at 6-9, 240 pounds, started 16 games last season and led the WCC in blocked shots (55) . He was the most improved player from the previous season and Egan looks for even more improve– ment, "especially on the defensive end and rebounding." When Bell wasn 't starting at center, the 6-8 Colvin was. Like Cottrell , Colvin made regular visits to the weight room this summer. A pleasant surprise at the end of the season was Kelvin Woods, who showed that he is equally effective on the perimeter or inside with his 6-5, 230-pound frame. Also returning are two 6-6 swingmen : Randy Thompson , who Egan describes as "very knowl– edgable of the game of basketball ," and Carlos Carrillo, a fine outside shooter. Don't let Jerome's size (6-8, 225) fool you . He is one of the team's best out– side shooters. Egan, who tried to re– cruit him out of high school and again at Mesa, is just happy to have Jerome, if only with one year of eligibility re– maining. Thomas, a junior, is a superior athlete who plays much bigger than his 6A listing and will get time at small for– ward. Hamilton, also from Mesa, is an excellent post defender. "That was our deficiency last year," Egan says, "and Shawn fills the gap if we're having pro– blems down there." Unlike last year's freshmen, Barn– hard will have time to develop as a post player without the pressures of con-

BACKCOURT The big change here will be in Dot– tin's presence. Dottin spent as much time at forward as guard last season, but Egan plans to establish his 6-5 super soph as a guard because " he handles the ball so well and thinks of other people first." Two other players battling for the other guard spot include returnee Wayman Strickland and new– comer Pat Holbert.
