Family fun at Shaw House THE festive events programme begins at Shaw House with the Christmas Fair taking place on Sunday, December 3, with more than 60 crafters all brimming with bespoke wares, as well as a live nativity scene with Miller’s Ark Animals. Entry to the fair is £1 for adults and children are free. Children’s Christmas parties take place during the fair, featuring Mr Muddles the magician, there will be a special visit from Santa and all children will receive a present. Parties are £4, please check website for times. Get creative at the festive workshop and make a Christmas table flower arrangement, Wednesday, December 20, £30. The workshop includes all materials plus a hot drink and mince pie. There’s also a series of seasonal concerts to get you in the festive spirit, starting with Old Christmas Return’d! on Friday, December 15, at 8pm. Piva bring you music and tales from Shakespeare’s time. Adults £14, Under 16s £5 (discounts with West Berkshire Card). GreenMatthews return to the house with A Christmas Carol – A Folk Opera , a brand-new retelling of the most thrilling Yuletide adventure of them all. Monday, December 18, 7.30pm. Sit back and revel in the beautiful sounds of the Three Rivers Community Choir who will treat you to a variety of Christmas songs, traditional carols, prose and poetry on Thursday, December 21, 7pm. IN 1753 the Hare & Hounds at Speen had its very first Christmas. “With a jovial Inn keeper and beer swilling wenches” the current owners like to think it was a great month for their famous inn. Time passes by and the inn is approaching its 264th Christmas season, with this great tradition of innkeeping continuing. The Christmas 2017 menus are now available on the Eat page of its website or to pick up at the inn. With lunch from £18.50 and dinner from £23.50, bookings really are coming in quickly, book early. The Barn, a former winner of the West Berkshire Restaurant & Bar of the Year award, continues to go from strength to strength, with ongoing support from its customers. In addition to the stunning oak-framed barn, there is also The Pantry and The Library for those smaller more intimate parties.
