During rapid-response care, special- ists such as physicians, nurses, and RTs work to stabilize the patient’s condition. In hospitals, the call for “code blue” means someone is not breathing or is having a heart attack. RTs would then stop what they are doing and rush to the bedside of that patient. They would then be responsible for helping to clear the patient’s airway, providing oxygen to the brain. In premature infants, RTs are responsible for helping babies breathe with as little effort as possible and then gradually weaning them off machines and oxygen until they can breathe
