ARCHITECTURE SKOLKOVO CAMPUS FOR STUDENTS

83

The student campus at the Skolkovo Innovation Centre for Science and Technology was designed with particular attention to the environmen- tal dimension. The campus infrastructure uses the latest solutions in en- ergy saving, solar panels, recycling and secondary use of water resourc- es. The environmental aspect of the project is, however, broader than just the innovative infrastructure and the choice of environmentally friendly building materials. Greening of pitched roofs is one of the solutions that are truly new for Russia. The main principle that formed the basis of the volu- metric, spatial and planning solutions is to establish diverse linkages be- tween the environment, the landscape, the building and the interiors. In par- ticular, each row of residential buildings has its own, individually determined height that keeps them from dominating over each other and helps them take full advantage of the sunlight. This is also achieved through the use

of continuous glazing on the side facades of the residential buildings. Special attention was given to designing a clear pedestrian and transport access structure. Any of the buildings on campus can be accessed by car but the primary focus is on pedestrians and the use of environmentally friendly vehicles.
