Marty’s Memories: Embracing Our Kindness by Marty Trower

The Quaker meeting house I sat in while visiting Philadelphia recently was large and grey-walled. The elongated benches were padded with long cushions and were all facing inward. I was in the city with two old and dear friends from school in Montreal.We sat in silence for an indeterminable and exquisite piece of time. It wasn’t long before my thoughts wandered to Chebeague and the last time I sat in a pew there at our beloved Methodist church in October. It was the Sunday after KristinWestra had died, and Pastor Melissa announced that she would be spending the morning at the Parish House with the children who were grappling with the loss of their much-loved teacher. I had taught with Kristin for thirteen years and had not yet found a way or a place to cope with the stunning loss. I sat with my partner, Lock, who held my shaking hands tightly, and I felt warm and safe. Melissa’s husband, Ben, took over at the pulpit and devotedly ran back and forth to the organ. eloquence his music would bring. He read and interpreted the twenty-third psalm, which we had heard so often this past year in our community. It was thoughtful, provocative, and comforting. The choir sang, softly and compellingly. My hands stopped shaking. Then, a communion was announced. Most of the congregation participated in this ritual and wound their way up to the altar and around through the aisles. Two members, Donna Damon and Polly Wentworth, broke out of the slow-moving line to lean over and give me a hug. It was a defining moment for me that I will remember forever. At the meeting house in Philadelphia, I was taken away from this lovely memory when the first of many speakers spoke up and talked about the power of a hug.The speaker then mentioned how many people go without a human embrace and how important hugs are to the well-being of the human race. I couldn’t believe it. Isn’t this what is called serendipity?
