1995 OUTLOOK Questions Abound For Torero Tennis

Ask Coach Ed Collins about his '95 USO Men's Tennis Team and he first responds with a puzzled look. "I don't know," answered Collins, who begins his 17th year at the helm of the Torero program. "We'll field a team of untested players and hope for the best." It's not that the Toreros will lack any experience -- four of the top six are re– turners -- it's just that most will be play– ing new positions in '95. Gone to graduation is Fredrik Axsater, last year's #1 player and pos– sessor of a USO career singles record of 80 and 41. "We'll definitely miss him," said Collins. Back to play for the Toreros are Emmanuel Udozorh, last year's #2 player; Bobby Hrdina, #3; J.J. Shobar,

Bobby Hrdina

#5; and Jeff Greenhut, #6. "They've all proven they can succeed at a certain level," said Collins. "For us to be good, a couple within this group must step up another level." Based on fall play, one of the leading candidates is Hrdina, a sopho– more from San Diego. At the Rolex Regionals he defeated UCLA's Eric Taino, and at the Rice Invitational he won 4 matches to win the #1 division consolation title. "He has the makings to be our top player," said Collins. Two newcomers figure in Collins' plans, and each comes to USO with a solid junior record. The most impressive, based on fall tournament play, is freshman Jack Whigham. A junior standout from Lake Mary, Florida, Jack was a 3-time Florida State High School Champion. Already he has distinguished himself at USO. In November he was a finalist in the #2 Division at the Rice Invitational, and in December he won the 17th San Diego All-College. Nobody was more impressed than Collins. "He's solid," Collins said, "and mentally very strong." The second Collins recruit is San Diegan James Conda, a former San Diego High School Champion and the 1993 SoCal JC singles and doubles champion. He has what Collins says is '1he experience and temperament to win some big college matches." Returnees who figure to compete for lower singles positions are Mark Huarte, a senior from Tempe, Arizona; nm Truebenbach, a junior from Tacoma, Washington; and Brian Jacobsen, a junior transfer from San Jose, California. How all the pieces fit together on this team -- who plays where, and with whom in doubles -- will take time and a bit of experimenting, according to Collins. "Our goal, as always, will be to do as well as we can," Collins said. The Torero netters will test their mettle against the nation's best teams. On the '95 schedule are dual matches with '94 NCAA Champ USC, '94 NCAA Finalist Stanford, along with perennial top-ranked teams from Cal– Berkeley, ASU , Arizona, UNLV, Kansas and UC Irvine. USO will also be challenged at the Penn/ASU National Collegiate Classic, the Pro-Kennex Tennis Classic, the 24th San Diego lntercollegiates and the West Coast Conference Championships. ''The new format and regional playoffs add to the excitement of college tennis," said Collins, who referred to the ITA's 1994 adoption of the 7-point college match where doubles pro sets precede the six singles matches, and the regionalization -- a la basketball -- of the NCAA's. -- SAN DIEGO .. 1994 USD TENNIS REVIEW Whew! For Coach Ed Collins the 1994Torero tennisseason is gone and, hopefully, forgotten. It was Collins' first losing season in his 16 years as the Toreros' coach and the first losing season in the his– tory of USO tennis. Although the Toreros took on 17 of the top-SO-ranked teams and lost no matches to unrankedteams, forCollins the season was a disappointment.

1994 San Diego Intercollegiate

Team Champions

"We underachieved," Collins ex- plained. "For a number of reasons we didn't realize our potential."

Ranked #23 in preseason (based, mostly, on a 16-4 record in '93) the Toreros began the spring season with a double header sweep of UCSD and UC Riverside and a O-for-2 outi ng against Stanford and Cal. At the 23rd San Diego lntercollegiates, Fredrik Axsater, Robert Pavliska and J.J. Shobar reached the finals of their respective divisions before the tournament was rained out. At the Arizona Invitational the Toreros lost and won tight matches with U of A and Washington. Against the Huskies, Axsater, Udozorh, Hofmann and Hrdina won key singles matches. In early March the Toreros visited ASU for the Penn National Collegiate Classic.. In the first round USO lost a tough 4-3 match with the host team; Udozorh, Shobar and Hrdina won their singles. In the consolation match USO blanked Northern Arizona 7-0. For the first time in its 8-year history USO lost its own Pro-Kennex Collegiate Classic. The Toreros lost in the final to Southern Methodist in a great college match; the team title was decided by one third set tie-breaker, in the last match on the court. In late March the Toreros flew cross-country to Montgomery, Alabama, to participate in the Blue-Gray National Classic, where they lost a trio of matches to Texas, Alabama-Birmingham and North Carolina. Back on their home courts, the Toreros lost tough dual matches to Utah (3-4), UNLV (3-4) and Harvard (1-6) . In an all-out effort to "end well ," the Toreros put in two solid perfor– mances against rivals UC Irvine and San Diego State. "In both matches we got total efforts," said Collins. At the WCC Championships, held at Pepperdine, USO was a runner– up to Pepperdine for the team title. Axsater and Udozorh lost in the quarters of singles and the teams of Hrdina-Shobar and Axsater-Huarte also fell in the round of 8. At the year-end awards banquet, Hrdina received the Best Overall Award, leading the team with a 17-1 Orecord in singles and a 17-9 record in doubles; he was also part of the Best Doubles Team, with J.J . Shobar. Shobar was voted by his teammates as Most Inspirational, Jeff Greenhut was selected as Most Improved . Axsater received the Sportsmanship Award and was recognized as Team Captain.

WHIGHAM WINS SAN DIEGO ALL-COLLEGE

In a battle between USO teammates, Jack Whigham defeated Bobby Hrdina to garner the 17th San Diego All– College Tennis Tournament.

Held the last week of November, Whigham, a freshman from Lake Mary, Flordia, won the 32-player draw losing only one set. In the semifinals he de– feated SDSU's Mike Paradowski 6-3,6-1. Whigham's win marked the first time a freshman won the title since USO 4-time All-American Jose Luis Noriega won it in 1988. In the final Whigham lost the first set to Hrdina 7-5 then came back to win 6- 4, 7-5. "It was a close match," Hrdina would say afterwards. "I played well. He played very well. He deserved to win." Whigham closed out the match with the last of his five aces.

A WINNING TRADITION TENN/.

USD is proud of its men's tennis program. Twice the team won NCAA Division II titles ('74, '75). In 1979 the team finished second and in 1980 the program moved up to Division I. This winning tradition was started by Andrew Rae, a native of Melbourne, Australia, who won NCAA Division II singles and doubles titles in '74 and '75. In 1978 USD's Rick Goldberg and Par Svensson won the NCAA Doubles Champi– onship. From 1980 through 1982 the netters were regularly ranked among the nation's top 20 Division I teams. In '80 and '81 the Toreros won Ojai team titles. During that time the team was led by Scott Lipton (San Jose, CA, '80 NCAA Div. I All– American), Terry Ward (St. Louis, MO, '81 wee Singles Champ and '81 Ojai Champ) and Peter Herrmann (San Diego, '82 Ojai Champ). The Toreros were back in the national rankings in '87, on the strength of their 24-9 record and dual match wins over Stanford and Pepperdine. Senior Jim McNamee (Seattle, WA) was WCC Singles Finalist and the team of David Stewart (Saratoga, CA) and Scott Patridge (La Jolla, CA) won the wee Doubles Cham– pionship. Led by four-time NCAA All-American, Jose Luis Noriega, USD won wee Team Championships in '89 and '90 and earned Volvo/lTA National Rankings of #14 in '89 and #12 in '90. USD annually competes at the nation's highest level of intercollegiate play. The '95 schedule includes a number of the nation's top ranked teams and several prestigious tournaments. In addition to the 16-team San Diego lntercollegiates and the Pacific Coast Doubles Chps, the Toreros will participate in the Pro– Kennex Collegiate Classic, the ASU/Penn National Collegiate Classic, and the West Coast Conference Chps (WCC), of which USD is a member. The Fall semester tennis schedule is almost as active as the Spring. USD annually hosts the San Diego All-College Tournament. They participate in the America West/Rice Challenge Cup, the All-America Tennis Collegiate Chps at U Texas, and the Rolex SoCal Chps at UC Irvine. In addition to intercollegiate tennis, USD offers advanced recreation tennis classes and year 'round intramural tennis events. The Toreros practice and play at USD's West Courts, an 8-court facility lo– cated in a park-like setting on the west end of campus. The setting, courts and cool ocean breeze create a perfect tennis environment.
