WHIGHAM WINS SAN DIEGO ALL-COLLEGE

In a battle between USO teammates, Jack Whigham defeated Bobby Hrdina to garner the 17th San Diego All– College Tennis Tournament.

Held the last week of November, Whigham, a freshman from Lake Mary, Flordia, won the 32-player draw losing only one set. In the semifinals he de– feated SDSU's Mike Paradowski 6-3,6-1. Whigham's win marked the first time a freshman won the title since USO 4-time All-American Jose Luis Noriega won it in 1988. In the final Whigham lost the first set to Hrdina 7-5 then came back to win 6- 4, 7-5. "It was a close match," Hrdina would say afterwards. "I played well. He played very well. He deserved to win." Whigham closed out the match with the last of his five aces.
