SPIFAN Overview
• Historical Perspective – AOAC infant formula methods were validated in 1980s – New formulas exposed some gaps in validated methods – Infant formula is highly regulated around the world – Regulatory agencies use AOAC methods
AOAC Engages the Formula Industry • Agreement with IFC signed in 2010 – Identify gaps in methods used to analyze label nutrients in infant formula – Create AOAC voluntary consensus standards for methodology for 15 sets of nutrients – Evaluate and recommend “best” methods – AOAC established the Stakeholder Panel on Infant Formula and Adult Nutritionals (SPIFAN) to develop the voluntary consensus standards
