RETA’s Testing and ANSI Guru

Dr. Ron Rodgers, RETA’s Psychometri- cian (testing expert) and ANSI Accredita- tion Manager, has guided development of all RETA credential- ing exams since 2002. RETA Testing Corner provides information and answers questions from RETA members, candidates and others to help them earn and benefit from RETA credentials. All RETA candidates must decide when to use information in the references that appear on-screen next to their test questions during each RETA test. Qualified operators need to know when to consult such references to limit an ammonia release, other system emergency or to prevent system failure on the job.

Many RETA certification candidates who score just below the minimum passing score of 70 on CARO, CIRO, CRES or CRST would have passed if they had better judgment about when and how to use these on-screen references. Every RETA study guide includes these on-screen references for that examination. Candidates should be as familiar with these sources before their test as they are with manuals for equipment in their facilities on the job. RETA study guides for each test can be downloaded and printed free from Certification screens on the RETA website. For example, each test includes questions about Safety Standards and Procedures. Answers to many of these questions are available in the Ammo- nia Safety Data Sheet (SDS) in the on-screen references. Candidates who

score in the 60s often answer multiple questions incorrectly for which the correct answers appear in the SDS. The CARO Study Guide provides the following resources that appear in the on-screen references during each CARO examination. • Formulas that might be needed to interpret or compute information on the job • Tables of refrigerant characteristics and theoretical discharge temperatures • An Ammonia Safety Data Sheet (SDS) • Ammonia and HCFC-22 Saturated Properties tables The CIRO Study Guide provides a sample operating screen, an electrical diagram, and guidance to help
